Haters Back Off is an upcoming television comedy series starring Colleen Evans, based on her character Miranda Sings, that is slated to debut on Netflix.[1] The series centers around "the oddball family life of Miranda Sings, an incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise who continues to fail upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous – it's just no one knows it yet."[2] Evans said that the show will depict Miranda's origins and evolution on her "road to fame", with appearances by YouTubers and other people she has met along the way.[3]
The series' eight episodes are expected to be released simultaneously.[2] The show was developed by Evans and her brother, Christopher Ballinger, together with showrunners Perry Rein and Gigi McCreery. It is being produced by Brightlight Pictures.[1] The show is named for Miranda Sings' signature catchphrase.[4]
The show will be "the first scripted series created by a YouTube personality."[5][6] /Film mused, "Haters Back Off seems like a smart move for Netflix. Since Miranda is already an internet celebrity, a streaming content provider seems like a natural fit. Her built-in audience is already used to watching original content online; if they're fans of her work on YouTube, Netflix is just a few clicks away."[7] TechCrunch predicted that the show will be a success and recommended that Hollywood executives take note of Netflix's initiative. "[T]he rise of YouTube-fueled online influencers has been breathtaking, as ... (mostly) Millennials have embraced self-serve distribution, building big audiences beyond the reach, knowledge and control of traditional entertainment gatekeepers, including the networks. ... Netflix can ... leverage the audiences of these online stars, and their marketing reach, to drive the fans to new properties ... online, where their fans already routinely seek entertainment".[8]

Background of the character
Since 2008, Evans has posted videos as her comically talentless, narcissistic and quirky character, Miranda Sings, primarily on the YouTube channel Miranda Sings.[13] The character is a satire of bad, but egotistical, performers who film themselves singing as a form of self-promotion.[14] Miranda is portrayed as a home-schooled young woman who still lives with her mother and uncle; she is eccentric and infantilized, narcissistically believes that she has was born famous, and is obsessed with show business fame.[15][16]
In the videos, Miranda sings in a comically off-key, yet plausible, voice covering mostly pop music hits. She sometimes discusses the character's backstory or current events that she usually misunderstands, or gives unhelpful "tutorials".[17] She uses spoonerisms and malapropisms, is irritable, ludicrously self-absorbed and self-righteous, socially awkward, and has a defiant, arrogant attitude.[18][19] She responds to viewers who take the videos seriously and offer criticism with the catchphrase, "Haters back off!"[20][21] The Miranda Sings YouTube channel has received more than 800 million views and has more than 5.8 million subscribers.[22]
Since 2009,[23] Evans has performed a one-woman live comedy act, as Miranda Sings, throughout North America and in Europe, Australia and elsewhere.[24] Miranda's other activities have included a 2012 appearance on the television show Victorious[25] and a 2014 back-to-school advertisement for Old Navy that received nearly 6 million views online.[26] Evans guest-starred as Miranda in a 2014 episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld called "Happy Thanksgiving Miranda".[27] Also in 2014, Evans appeared as Miranda on The Tonight Show playing Pictionary with Jimmy Fallon, Martin Short and Seinfeld.[28] In 2015, she appeared on The Grace Helbig Show with Jim Parsons[29] and released a book, Selp-Helf, written in Miranda's voice,[30] that debuted at No. 1 on the The New York Times Best Seller list for Advice, How-To & Miscellaneous,[31] remained on the list for 11 weeks[32] and is still on the Times' monthly Best Seller list for "Humor" as of January 2016.[33]
Production
The series began filming in April 2016 in Vancouver, Canada,[34][35] and is expected to wrap about May 30.[11]
