The Amazing Race 5 is the fifth installment of the American reality television show The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 5 featured 11 teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world.

This season premiered on July 6, 2004, with weekly showings at 8:00 pm EDT, followed by the Tuesday edition of Big Brother 5. The 2-hour season finale aired on September 21, 2004.

Married parents Chip and Kim McAllister were the winners of the race, and were the first African American contestants to win the competition. At 44, Kim is the oldest winning female (she is tied with Season 7's Joyce); together they form the oldest winning team (Chip was 46 and was the oldest male to win until Season 24).

A DVD for this season was released on April 24, 2012, via Amazon.com's CreateSpace program.[1]

Production

Development and filming

The race's starting line was at Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California.

After the anemic ratings for The Amazing Race 4, CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves doubted whether the series would be renewed for another season.[2] After much deliberation, CBS officially ordered a fifth installment of the Race in September 2003. Some observers cited the series' recent Emmy win as the factor behind its renewal.[3] While CBS flirted with the idea of a fall premiere, it ultimately gave Season 5 a summer broadcast to create momentum for The Amazing Race 6 on the fall schedule.[4]

This season introduced two major twists to the Race: the Yield and a non-elimination penalty.[5] The Yield allowed one team to force another team to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time. The Yield was available on each leg, though it was not presented on each episode. The non-elimination penalty meant teams finishing last on non-elimination legs were stripped of any money they had accumulated and received no money at the start of the next leg. This was also the first season to see the number of Fast Forwards reduced; only two were available in the entire Race.[6]

The Amazing Race 5 lasted 31–32 days and traveled 72,000 miles (116,000 km), which was the longest race route yet, covering six continents (that was later matched by The Amazing Race 11) and eleven countries. The teams visited nine countries not previously seen on the show, including Uruguay, Argentina, Russia, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Philippines and Canada. This is the first time the former Soviet Union and the Middle East were visited on the race. Also, for the first time the final leg had an intermediate destination in a foreign country.

During pre-production the producers moved the Dubai leg of the race from the originally planned location of Istanbul, Turkey. The reason for this decision has not been disclosed. Istanbul was eventually visited by the Race in The Amazing Race 7, around two seasons later.

Marshall and Lance were the first team in Amazing Race history to quit following Marshall's knee injury during the leg 6 roadblock in Luxor, Egypt. When the team arrived at the final roadblock site after all the other teams had left, the decision was made to give up rather than complete the frustrating 'needle in a haystack' digging task.

Two challenges were edited out of the program since they did not affect team placement. The first was a nut finding Roadblock in the markets of Dubai; the second, a tipi building challenge in Banff, Alberta.[7]

Cast

Brandon and Nicole finished the race in third place.

Applications were due on October 8, 2003. Filming began on January 30, 2004 and finished on February 27, 2004.[8]

Following two seasons that featured twelve teams, the contestant pool was reduced to eleven for this season. They included a military man, a dating widowed couple, female twins, a former Big Brother contestant, a team member with dwarfism, and a few beauty pageant queens.

Chip portrayed a young Muhammad Ali in the 1977 film The Greatest (Ali portrayed the adult version of himself).

Erika, Alison, Nicole and Christie competed against one another in various beauty pageants. Christie was a former Miss Teen USA champion, while Nicole was the winner of Miss Texas USA.

Charla & Mirna returned to participate in The Amazing Race All-Stars among a cast of returning teams from seasons 1-10.

Colin & Christie were engaged on CBS's Early Show. They were invited to participate in The Amazing Race All-Stars, but had to decline due to Christie's pregnancy.

Erika became a producer with the show and was on-hand during the Season 12 open casting call in Cabazon, California. Erika is credited with recruiting the show's first and second all-female winning teams, anesthesiologists Nat & Kat, the winners of Season 17, and sisters Kisha & Jen, the winners of Season 18.

Alison of Big Brother 4 was the first contestant on a previously aired reality show to take part in this race. Alison later appeared on Big Brother: All Stars and was the first person voted out.

In 2005, Chip, Kim, Charla and Mirna all competed on the Bravo reality series Battle of the Network Reality Stars, along with 28 other individuals from various reality series. Mirna was a member of the winning team.

The show also featured Miss Uruguay Natalia Rodriguez Lassiy, who competed in Miss World 2003, as a greeter at the Uruguay pit stop, and Luli Arroyo, the daughter of then-Philippine president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the local greeter at the Manila pit stop.

Leg 1 (United States → Uruguay)

In Punta del Este, Uruguay, teams visited The Hand in the Sand.

Airdate: July 6, 2004

At the start of The Amazing Race 5 on Santa Monica Pier, teams found the first clue with their backpacks, which told them to travel to Montevideo, Uruguay. They must choose a marked car and drive to Los Angeles International Airport and there were two flights available: the first flight carries four teams, but actually arrives later, while the second flight carries seven teams and arrives first.

Upon arriving in Montevideo, they must take a bus to Punta del Este. Once there, teams had to find The Hand in the Sand and find their next clue, sending them to Gorriti Island and search the pier for the next clue. Once on the island, teams had to search for three different departure times on boats back to the mainland for the next morning hidden on 11 trees. Each boat leaves thirty minutes apart.

After returning to the mainland, teams found their next clue on the dock, instructing them to travel to Maldonado and find the José Francisco González Meat Warehouse. At the Meat Warehouse, teams had to deliver a 55 pounds (25 kg) slab of meat, 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to La Rosada Carniceria to eceive their next clue from the butcher. It was here that teams found the first Yield, but no one used it. After the delivery, the clue instructed teams to travel to Conrad Hotel (known as "Blue and White Hotel") back in Punta del Este.

At the Hotel, the teams encountered the first Detour; a choice between Zips or Chips. In Zips, teams had to ascend to the hotel penthouse and travel by zip-line 210 feet (64 m) above the ground to the other tower, then take a second zip line 18 stories down to the hotel pool to receive their next clue. In Chips, teams had to play roulette in the hotel casino with 20 chips. Once they won, they'd receive their next clue, however, if they lost all of their chips, they would have to do the Zips task. After the Detour, teams had to travel to Casapueblo in Punta Ballena, the Pit Stop for this leg.

Leg 2 (Uruguay → Argentina)

In Buenos Aires, teams visited the grave of Evita Perón in la Recoleta Cemetery.

At the start of the leg, teams chose a marked car and drove to Shake Mega Disco in Montevideo. Once there, they had to search the dance floor filled with foam for a plastic ball and rip the ball open to get the clue inside, which instructed teams to travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina using a ferry boarding at Colonia del Sacramento.

Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, teams needed to find the gravesite of former Argentine first lady Evita Perón at Recoleta Cemetery to get their next clue. At the cemetery, teams found the Detour in Buenos Aires; a choice between Perro or Tango. In Perro, teams must take on the extremely popular job of dog walking. Starting from immediately outside the cemetery, teams had to walk eight dogs on a 1 mi (1.6 km) while using a provided map to navigate past a series of three checkpoints to their final destination, Floralis Genérica. Once the team brings all of the dogs, they would receive their next clue. In Tango, teams had to travel across the city's crowded streets to Teatro Lola Membrives. Once there, teams were given a photo of a tango dancer and had to find the dancer who matched their photo amongst a crowd similar-looking dancers to receive their next clue. If the teams gave it to the wrong dancer, the dancer would take the photo and they would have to get a new picture and try again.

After the Detour, teams had to travel to La Estancia La Invernada Ranch in San Antonio de Areco to find the next Roadblock, saying "The person who performs this task should have quick hands and quick feet". For this Roadblock, one team member must was to play a traditional game of ribbon roping. They must enter a corral and attempt to remove a bandana from the neck of one of the calves. Once done, a gaucho woman would give them their next clue. After the Roadblock, teams then rode a horse-drawn carriage 2 mi (3.2 km) to the Pit Stop at La Porteña.

Leg 3 (Argentina)

Upon arriving in San Carlos de Bariloche, teams travelled to the Civic Center, where the mayor would hand them their clue.

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to fly to San Carlos de Bariloche, in Patagonia. Upon arrival, they had to choose a marked vehicles and drive to the Civic Center and find the mayor to receive their next clue. Then, teams drove to Del Turista Chocolate Factory and found the next Roadblock, asking "Who's got the sweet tooth?". For this Roadblock, one team member had to search through a table of chocolates for one with a white center by biting into them. Of the 11,000 chocolates, only 20 of them had a white center. When the white center was found, they would get their next clue.

After the Roadblock, teams were sent to Villa Catedral where they had to take a gondola to a mountain and follow a path to the next Detour; a choice between Smooth Sailing or Rough Riding. In Smooth Sailing, each teammate had to paraglide in tandem with an instructor off a 5,000-foot (1,500 m) mountain. When they successfully landed, they would get their next clue. In Rough Riding, each team must ride a mountain bike on a 6 miles (9.7 km) course down the mountain. When they had completed the course, they would receive their next clue. After the Roadblock, teams had to drive to the next Pit Stop at Bahia Lopez lake.

Leg 4 (Argentina → Russia)

Teams visited the Battleship Aurora docked in Saint Petersburg to receive the Detour clue.

Airdate: July 27, 2004

At the start of the leg, teams were told to take a bus back Buenos Aires and fly to Saint Petersburg, Russia. Once there, they had to find their next clue aboard the Battleship Aurora. On the ship, teams found the Detour; a choice between Block 5 Shots or Drink 1 Shot. In Block 5 Shots, teams had to travel to SKA hockey rink, put on a protective gear and step to the goalie's position to block five slap shots by professional hockey players. If the shots are blocked, a coach would give them the next clue. In Drink 1 Shot, teams had to travel to Anichkov Palace and perform a cossack ritual: Balance a shot glass of vodka on the blade of a saber, and tilt the sword to drink the vodka without dropping the glass. When they are done, they would receive their next clue.

After the Detour, teams were instructed to head to the Bronze Horseman for their next clue, which sent them to the Old Tower Restaurant in Pushkin where they found the next Roadblock, asking "Who's got a taste for the good life?". For this Roadblock, one team member must eat 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of caviar. Once the caviar was gone, a waiter would give them their next clue. After the Roadblock, teams rode in a horse-drawn carriage to the Pit Stop at Catherine's Palace.

Leg 5 (Russia → Egypt)

In Cairo, teams visited the infamous Giza pyramid complex, including The Sphinx as the pit stop.

At the start of the leg, teams took a train back to Saint Petersburg and made their way to the Hermitage Museum. At the Museum, the curator would follow the teams around the museum as they had to find the painting of The Return of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt amongst thousands of paintings. When they found the correct painting, the curator will hand over their next clue. which instructed teams to travel to Cairo, Egypt.

Upon arriving in Cairo, teams had to head to the Tower of Cairo and climb to the top to find their next clue and the first Fast Forward. For the first of two Fast Forwards in the Race, teams had to go to the Pharaonic Village, select a sarcophagus and transport it via ferry into the temple to deliver it to the priest to win the Fast Forward.

Back at the tower, teams were directed to Osiris Shaft at the Giza pyramid complex in Giza Plateau where they found the Roadblock, asking "Who's up for going down?". For this Roadblock, one team member had to descend down a series of ladders into Osiris Shaft 140 feet (43 m) below sea level and they retrieve a satchel containing puzzle pieces, then present it to an Egyptologist to get the next clue. Teams then had to use the puzzle pieces in the satchel and a map to figure out their next destination. If teams placed their puzzle pieces onto the map, a hole in the puzzle would show them to go to the Base of the Pyramid.

At the Base of the Pyramid, teams found the next Detour, a choice between Rock & Roll or Hump & Ride. In Rock & Roll, teams had to use traditional techniques to transport two rocks weighing approximately 600 pounds (270 kg) across an area the size of a football field to receive their next clue. In Hump & Ride, teams had to pick a pair of camels hitched to a cart loaded with carpets from a merchant and drive them 1 mile (1.6 km) through the desert to receive the next clue. After the Detour, teams headed for the Pit Stop at Sphinx.

Leg 6 (Egypt)

Upon arriving in the ancient city of Luxor, teams visited the Karnak temple complex to find their next clue.

At the start of the leg, teams made their way to the entrance of the Great Pyramid of Giza and had to descend 350 feet (110 m) down to a shaft below into the creation room at the geographical centre of Earth where they had to find the next clue. The clue teams were told to travel to the ancient city of Luxor at the base of the Nile River.

Upon arriving in Luxor, teams had to head to Karnak Temple and where found the next Detour, a choice between Herd It or Haul It. For either option, teams have travel by kalesh, a traditional carriage. In Herd It, teams had to travel to Banana Island and load ten goats into a sailboat and deliver them to a shepherd on the other side of the Nile River and give the animals to a waiting shepherd for their next clue. In Haul It, teams traveled 3 miles (4.8 km) to a pigeon farm and use a traditional device to haul water from the Nile into an urn and transport it by donkey to fill a cistern. When it is filled in a correct mark, they will get their next clue.

After the Detour, teams headed to Habu Temple where they found the Roadblock clue, saying "This task requires keen eyes and a lot of patience". For this Roadblock, one team member had to choose a large plot of sand to use archeological tools to unearth a scarab, a beetle stone carving which is a part of Egyptian mythology. When the scarab is found, an archaeologist will give them their next clue. After the Roadblock, teams traveled by ferry to the Pit Stop at Crocodile Island.

Leg 7 (Egypt → Kenya → Tanzania)

The Pit Stop on this leg of the Race was the lookout over Lake Manyara in Tanzania.

Airdate: August 17, 2004

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to travel to Nairobi, Kenya using one of two flights to Cairo leaving three hours apart. Once in Nairobi, teams must find Z. Boskovic Air Charters, where they had to sign up for a charter flight to a mystery destination with each flight departing forty-five minutes apart.

The mystery destination was revealed to be Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Upon landing, they picked up their next clue and were told to travel by bus to Mto wa Mbu. Once there, the teams found the next Detour; a choice between Buzzing or Busy. In Buzzing, teams had to travel by bicycle to a local honey farm, put on a beekeeper suits and harvest 2 kilograms (4.4 lb) of honey from traditional African hives to receive their next clue. In Busy, teams had to travel to a furniture store and deliver two chairs to a specified house. When the chairs are delivered to the right address, the resident would give teams a receipt. Teams then had to return to the shopkeeper and give him the receipt to get their next clue.

After the Detour, teams headed to the village of Kibaoni and find Kavishe Hotel where they found the Roadblock, asking "Who's really hungry?". For this Roadblock, one team member had to crack open an ostrich egg and pour it into a wooden bowl. The restaurant owner would allow them to continue only if the bowl was full. nOce approved, they must scramble a portion equal to two dozen chicken eggs and eat it all to get their next clue. After the Roadblock, teams must take the zip line known as Flying Fox over a gorge 230 feet (70 m) below to proceed to the Pit Stop, the lookout of Lake Manyara.

Leg 8 (Tanzania → United Arab Emirates)

Upon arriving in Dubai, teams visited the famous Burj Al Arab for a clue.

Airdate: August 24, 2004

At the start the leg, teams had sign up for one of three designated times on a charter flight to Nairobi departing every thirty minutes. From there, the teams traveled to the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Upon arriving in Dubai, teams had to head to the Burj Al Arab hotel and find the next clue at the top of the helipad. There was a Roadblock in the leg taking place at an Abra in Bur Dubai, in an unaired segment requiring one team member to buy nuts in the local market and then deliver them to a ship.[9]

At the hotel was the Detour, a choice between Off Plane or Off Road. In Off Plane, teams had to travel to the Al Quwain Aero Club and tandem skydive 10,000 feet (3,000 m) with an instructor to a landing site in the Margham Dunes. When they had successfully landed in correct zone, they would get their next clue. In Off Road, teams had to travel directly to the Margham Dunes, where they must drive a marked 4x4 over a 6 miles (9.7 km) course to the desert and ending at the skydiving landing site. However, if a team gets stuck in the sand, they must radio for help which could take a long time. After the Detour, teams must take a camel and use a GPS navigation system program to guide them to the Pit Stop; the Desert Oasis at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve .

Leg 9 (United Arab Emirates → India)

The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata was the ninth Pit Stop of The Amazing Race 5.

Airdate: August 31, 2004

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to drive themselves to Wild Wadi in Dubai and to find their next clue. Upon arrival, teams had to pick up a number and follow the path of the Jumeirah Sceirah slide where both team members had to ride the free waterfall slide to receive their next clue, telling the teams to travel to the city of Kolkata, India.

Upon arrival in Kolkata, they headed to Sahid Minar and follow the path to the next clue, along with a Fast Forward. In the last of two Fast Forwards in the Race, teams were instructed travel 7 miles (11 km) to a temple and engage in a Hindu cleansing ritual that involves shaving the head of all hair. Once both team members were completely bald, they would win the Fast Forward pass.

All other teams had to travel to Globe Brick Factory in Garia and where they found the Roadblock asking "Who's ready to get down and dirty?". For this Roadblock, one team member was required to use a traditional Indian mold to make 20 mud bricks. Once the factory worker determined that they were all properly formed, they would receive their next clue.

After the Roadblock, teams must take by train to Sealdah Station in Kolkata to find their next clue which contained the Detour, a choice between Heavy but Short or Light but Long. In Heavy but Short, teams had to travel over 10 miles (16 km) to Lansdowne Road to push a taxi with no engine a half-mile to a local garage. Once done, the owner will hand them their next clue. In Light but Long, teams had to travel to Kolkata's largest flower market to find a particular stall and receive a garland, which they must then release into the Ganges for good luck to receive their next clue. After the Detour, teams had to travel to the next Pit Stop at Victoria Memorial.

Leg 10 (India → New Zealand)

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member rode in a Zorb down a hill in New Zealand.

Airdate: September 7, 2004

At the start of the leg, teams were informed to fly to Auckland, New Zealand. Once there, they had to choose a marked car and drive themselves to Rotorua and had to find Rotorua Museum. They found that their next clue was the Detour, a choice between Clean or Dirty. In Clean, teams had to drive 13 miles (21 km) to Okere Falls and perform an adventure sport called river sledging. With the help of the two guides, teams must complete 1 mile (1.6 km) course with only a small board, called a sledge, for protection. In Dirty, teams had to travel 10 miles (16 km) to Hell's Gate and search for clues buried in a hot mud pit.

After the Detour, the teams were instructed to drive themselves to Matapara Farms in Paengaroa where they found the next Roadblock asking, "Who's ready for a wild ride?". For this Roadblock, one team member had to inflate a Zorb and ride it down a hillside. At the bottom of the hill, the rider had to walk the Zorb a short distance to cross a finish line, then exit and join his or her teammate and run to the nearby Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (New Zealand → Philippines)

While in the Philippines, teams took part in one of the Detours involving ox-drawn plow.

Airdate: September 14, 2004

At the start of the leg, teams had to travel to Westhaven Marina in Auckland, where they must find a yacht named Hydroflow lower it down to receive their next clue. The teams then found the next Roadblock, saying "The person who performs this task should have strong arms, strong legs, and no fear of heights". or this Roadblock, one team member must travel to Auckland Harbour Bridge and climb a 75-foot (23 m) ladder to the girders beneath the roadway. From there, they must walk along the girders until they reached the clue on the other side.

After the team members were lowered onto a boat, they were told their next destination was Manila, the Philippines. Upon arrival, they had to head to Malagueña Motors in Imus. At the Motor Factory, teams encountered with a Yield, where Chip & Kim used it on Colin & Christie. Also at the factory, teams were required to decorate a jeepney with all the provided items. Once it was decorated properly, teams will get their next clue.

From there, teams traveled to the Giant Duck statue in Victoria for the next Detour; a choice between Plow or Fowl. In Plow, teams had to choose a marked field and use an ox-drawn plow to till the soil, until the plow caught on a buried rope attached to their next clue. This task was later revisited in The Amazing Race 25 as Switchback. In Fowl, teams had to work together and herd 1,000 ducks from one pen to another pen 50 yards (46 m) away. After the Detour, teams were instructed to travel to Coconut Palace in Pasay for the Pit Stop.

Leg 12 (Philippines)

El Nido was the site of much of this Leg.

At the start of the leg, teams headed to Jose Rizal Monument in Rizal Park to find their next clue, which informed to travel to A Soriano Aviation and take one of two charter flights leaving forty-five minutes apart reach them to travel to El Nido in the island province of Palawan.

Upon arrival in El Nido, teams choose a marked jeepney where they had to travel to El Nido Pier, then take a marked boat to a buoy to find their next clue. The teams then had to use a pair of binoculars to search the shores of three islands for one with a Philippine flag (the others were Czech Republic flag and Equatorial Guinea flag on the other nearby islands) and they cannot ask a guide for help. If teams chose an incorrect island, they had to try again. When the correct flag was found, they received their next clue.

After finding the correct flag, teams had to put on snorkel gear and search underwater for one of four giant clams containing their next clue (this is part of an unaired Detour). The clue then told the teams to head to Lagen Wall where the next Roadblock clue warned, "If You Have Vertigo? Don't Go". For this Roadblock, one team member to climb a 150-foot (46 m) rock wall using an ascender. Upon completing the ascent, they would get the next clue and rappel down back to their partner. After the Roadblock, teams had to paddle themselves in a kayak to the Pit Stop on Lagen Island.

Leg 13 (Philippines → Canada → United States)

Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Canada was the location of the final Detour of this leg.

At the start of the leg, teams were informed to head to the city of Calgary, in the Canadian province of Alberta. First, they must catch a charter flight from El Nido to Manila that will depart at 6:30 a.m. Upon arrival, teams headed next to the ski resort town of Banff. In an unaired segment, teams had to head to a shopping center and where they had to pick an article of winter clothing (either jacket or gloves) for the rest of the leg until receiving their next clue. At the resort, teams headed to the Banff Springs Hotel and found the last Roadblock, which it also unaired, that required one team member to build a teepee outside the Banff Springs Hotel.[7]

Next, teams were sent to the Lookout Mountain in Sunshine Village at Banff National Park where they had to hike up a 1,000 feet (300 m) snow slope to the Continental Divide in order to reach the clue at the top, which directed the teams to Canada Olympic Park and find Olympic Cauldron to find their next clue.

At the Olympic Park was the final Detour; a choice between Slide or Ride. In Slide, teams traveled to Canada Olympic Park bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track and had to complete the Olympic course on a two-man luge at speeds up to 40 miles per hour and complete the course in 34 seconds or less to receive the next clue. If they failed, they had to keep trying until they hit the target time. In Ride, teams traveled to Canada Olympic Park downhill course and had to use mountain bikes to complete the Olympic slalom course in three minutes or less to receive the next clue. If they failed to finish in the required time, they must try again.

After the Detour, teams traveled to their final destination city: Dallas, Texas. Upon arriving in Dallas, teams headed to Fort Worth Stockyards in Fort Worth where they had to enter giant maze to find 4 wooden boxes with their names on it, each containing a picture of a place previously visited on the Race, using the four keys provided on their respective boards. Then they must take the picture, find their way out of the maze and place it on the board. They must repeat the process for the other two locations with pictures, one at a time, in numerical order. The fourth and last given key from the board will open a wooden box which contains another key that will unlock the glass box on the board, which contains their final clue, which sent teams to the Finish Line at Trammell Crow Park.
