Athersley Recreation F.C. is an English football club based in Athersley, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. They play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, at level 9 of the English football league system.

History

The club was formed in 1979 as Athersley North Juniors, playing mostly in local Barnsley leagues.[2] They were renamed Athersley Recreation in the summer of 1986.

The club joined the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League (S&HCSL) in 1997, and reached the top flight of the S&HCSL in 1999 after winning back-to-back promotions. They then won the Premier Division title at the first attempt.[3]

They would go on to become the most successful club in the history of the County Senior League, finishing inside the top two positions for nine consecutive seasons from 2003–04. After their fifth title win in 2012 the club was in a position to take promotion to the Northern Counties East League (NCEL), entering Division One. After finishing as runners-up in their first NCEL season, they were promoted again, to the Premier Division. In 2013 they entered the FA Vase for the first time, and a year later they made their FA Cup debut.

In May 2014 they won the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup for the first time, beating Frickley Athletic in the final at Hillsborough.[4]
