The third season of Australian Survivor is a television series based on the popular reality game show Survivor. The series was announced in November 2015, and will air on Network Ten in 2016.[2] Actor Jonathan LaPaglia was named as the host.[3]

This season will be the third Australian version of the program, the second to feature non-celebrity contestants and the first to air on Network Ten. The first season aired on the Nine Network in 2002, while the second season (featuring celebrity contestants) aired in 2006 on the Seven Network.[4]

The new series gives Australian Survivor the rare distinction of being one of the few Australian programs to have aired across all three commercial networks in Australia.

Production

Conception

After Australian Celebrity Survivor was not renewed by the Seven Network, it appeared that a third season of Australian Survivor would be very unlikely. However, in August 2013, the creator of the Survivor format, Charlie Parsons revealed on an interview that the rights to produced Australian Survivor had been licensed to an undisclosed production company who believed that there was an appetite for the program and would be pitching it to Australian networks.[5] On 19 November 2015, Network Ten revealed at their upfronts that they would be commissioning a revival of Australian Survivor to air in late 2016. It was also revealed that Endermol Shine Australia would be producing the series in association with Castaway Television.[6]

Casting

With the announcement of the series in November 2015, a casting call was made for potental contestants. According to a promo that was shown at the upfronts, 24 contestants would participate in the show [1] which is larger than any cast of American Survivor. Applicants for the series were required to be 18 years of age or older, be Australian citizens or residents and able to swim.[7] More than 5,000 people applied with the first week of casting being opened,[8] and 7,500 had applied before the year's end.[9] By mid January, the number of applications reached 10,000 and it had been expected that applicants would reach 15,000 by the 10 February deadline. This would make it the largest number of applicants for a Network Ten reality program.[10]

Filming & Development

Many senior personnel were hired to work on the program before the end of 2015, including 'challenge guru' Trent Pattison, who has previously worked on the American version of Survivor as well as Ten's I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!.[11]

Filming of the series will begin in May 2016. Early rumours suggested that the Malaysian island of Pulau Tiga (the same location used for the inaugural season of both the American edition and the British edition).[11] It was later reported that filming would take place in Samoa (which was used for the 19th, 20th, 23rd and 24th seasons of the American series).[12]
