Brennen College is an educational institution in Kerala, affiliated to Kannur University. It is located in Dharmadam, Thalassery of Kerala state, India. The college evolved from a school established by the English philanthropist Edward Brennen, who had made Thalassery his home. In December 2004, the government of Kerala bestowed the status of "university" on Brennen College. There are 16 departments in the college, most of which offer postgraduate level courses. There are 2,000 students and 100 teaching staff.
History
Government Brennen College developed out of the free school established in 1862 by Edward Brennen, a master attendant of Tellicherry Port. It was elevated to the status of a II Grade College with F.A. Classes in 1890. The institution became a I Grade College in 1947, and it was shifted to the new building at Darmadam in 1958. Government Brennen College celebrated its century in 1990 . The then Vice President of India, His Excellency Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma inaugurated the centenary celebrations.
Brennen College is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Government of Kerala. The University Grants Commission includes the college in 12B and 2F Categories. In 2004 September, the institution was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council at A Grade.
The Brennen College campus is situated in Dharmadam Panchayath on a hillock just 5 km north of Thalassery town and 1 km away from Kannur-Thalassery National Highway. The campus has 16.5 acres (67,000 m2) of land housing the academic departments, administrative office, central library, student hostels, staff quarters, and play ground.
‘Santivanam’ is probably the only conserved pristine forest patch in a college campus in Kerala. The greenhouse beside the new PG Block and the Medicinal Herbs Garden in front of the administrative block also signify the eco-friendly culture of Brennen College.
