Chicago Med is an American medical drama television series created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead as the second spin-off from Chicago Fire. The series premiered on November 17, 2015. The show focuses on the emergency department (ED) doctors and nurses of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and how they tackle different tasks everyday to save patients' lives.^[1] NBC originally ordered 13 episodes for season one, however on December 11, 2015, an additional 5 episodes were ordered, bringing the season to 18 episodes.^[2]

On February 1, 2016, NBC renewed the series for a second season.^[3]

Premise

Set in Chicago, Chicago Med is the third series in Dick Wolf's Chicago franchise. It focuses on the emergency department at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and on its doctors and nurses as they work to save patients' lives. It sometimes intertwines with characters from Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Pregnant pediatrician Dr. Natalie Manning reveals that her husband was killed during his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Medical student Sarah Reese's first days on rotation take an emotional toll on her. Halstead and Manning are forced to perform an emergency surgery on a patient who is a surrogate to a couple. Dr. Rhodes tries to treat a patient he's known for years who was impaled by a chandelier and deals with his overbearing father at the same time.

A mass movie theater shooting sends Chicago Memorial on edge. Dr. Halstead treats a patient who got trampled during the incident who later becomes brain dead. Sharon refuses to approve a liver transplant that Dr. Rhodes needs for his patient. Dr. Manning and Dr. Charles treat a patient with an apparent eating disorder. The person who stopped the shooter is questioned when it turns out the shooter did not have a gun. Dr. Rhodes is involved with Dr. Zanetti.

Hermann's condition takes a dramatic turn when Dr. Rhodes performs emergency surgery on him. Kelly Severide and Dr. Rhodes clash when it comes to Hermann's treatment. Dr. Choi, Dr. Charles, and Detective Jay Halstead investigate a woman from a Firehouse 51 call who was admitted after a possible suicide attempt. The doctors discover she was receiving high doses of chemotherapy for cancer she never had. April's younger brother has his first day on rotation and takes credit for Reese's work. This episode is the second part of a three-part crossover with Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D..

Meanwhile, Dr. Charles and Reese diagnose a patient with suicidal thoughts and place him on psychological hold.

Reese performs an procedure she's not qualified for on a patient while awaiting the results of her residency match, and Dr. Charles diagnoses a patient with a rare genetic disorder when he tries to saw off his own arm.

As Dr. Choi deals with his PTSD, he treats a veteran with a problem that his heart beats too loudly. Dr. Manning treats a child who she originally thought was being abused by his father, until Dr. Charles makes a shocking diagnosis to the patient's brother. Dr. Rhodes must deal with the fallout of a child dying on his operating table. April starts to date a patients father, against Maggie's advice. Reese faints in front of Dr. Halstead, and it turns out she really doesn't want to leave the ER for pathology, which Sharon says isn't possible since the residency choices are legally binding contracts.

Dr. Choi deals with a surrogate mother who is at 32 weeks, but needs an emergency c-section because the baby is in destress but tries to refuse, because she will not receive her bonus if it is not full term. Meanwhile, Dr. Halstead treats a family friend. Dr. Manning and Dr. Charles treat a patient with severe stomach pains. Also, April gets annoyed when she catches her brother running an enterprise side-business without a license. Dr. Rhodes avoids seeing his sister to discuss family issues.

Also, Sharon warns everyone at the hospital to be on their professional behavior when the Joint Commission visits.

Production

The series was greenlighted by NBC for the show's pilot episode on May 1, 2015.^[29]

On August 21, 2015, Andrew Dettman stepped down as showrunner due to "creative differences" following his appointment in June.^[30] Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov were appointed as new showrunners on August 27, 2015.^[31]

On December 11, 2015, NBC ordered five more episodes, bringing the total number of episodes in the first season to 18.^[2]

Casting

Laurie Holden was originally cast as Dr. Hannah Tramble, but dropped out due to "family reasons".^[32][33] On May 29, 2015, Arrow star Colin Donnell was cast as Dr. Connor Rhodes, the hospital's newest ED physician.^[34] In July 2015, Brian Tee joined the cast as Dr. Ethan Choi, an expert in infectious disease prevention and a Navy Reserve medical officer.^[35] Pretty Little Liars star Torrey DeVitto was cast on August 13, 2015, as Dr. Natalie Manning, the ED pediatrician.^[36] On August 14, 2015, Rachel DiPillo was cast as Sarah Reese, a fourth year medical student.^[37]

• "Malignant" is part two of a crossover with Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. where Christopher Herrmann is treated for a stab wound while a woman pulled from a fire is discovered to have been given unnecessary chemotherapy along with other patients.^[38] It features Kelly Severide, Gabriela Dawson, Sylvie Brett, Jessica Chilton, Christopher Herrmann, Joe Cruz and Mouch from Fire as well as Jay Halstead and Erin Lindsay from P.D., while "Now I'm God" features Natalie Manning and Daniel Charles.

Reception

Metacritic's aggregate score currently stands at 52 out of 100, based on 17 "mixed or average" reviews. Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes gives the show a 46% "rotten" grade, with an average rating of 7/10.
