Faculty of Social Sciences of University of Tehran was established in 1958 under the Institute for Social Research. As one of the oldest Social Sciences faculties of the region, its leading professors have trained many of the country's top sociologists. Students have a very active social and political life in the Faculty through different Clubs and Societies.

History

The Faculty of Social Sciences has gone through many structural changes throughout its five decades of research and educational activities. The greater part of these changes has taken place since the 1990s, including the launch of a PhD program in Sociology in 1989, new programs on Theoretical Cultural Sociology, Sociology of Social Matters, Sociology of Development,Sociology of Social Groups, and a PhD program for Demography. Many other programs and majors have also been introduced in the undergraduate and graduate levels. In the summer of 1992, the Faculty moved to its 22,000 square meters new building outside the main University Campus with eleven 45-seat classrooms, one 100-seat lecture hall, seven 75-seat classrooms, and several computer labs. The Faculty has an Ibn-Khaldun auditorium, with 275 seats, and "Shari'ati" auditorium with over 100 seats for conferences and symposiums.

Affiliated Educational and Research Centers

was established in 1967 with the aim of furthering educational programs and carrying out the Faculty's research projects.The Institute is made up of three research departments:

  1. Urban Cooperative Business Research
  2. Rural Cooperative Business Research
  3. Comparative Cooperative Business Research

was established in 2006 with the support of Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization. The Center's main focus is to academically analyze the problems of tourism in Iran and to assist Iran's tourism industry.

Other academic Associations in the Faculty include:

  1. Iran's Sociology Association (established in 1992)
  2. Iran's Demography Association (established in 2000)
  3. Iran's Anthropology Association (established in 2000)

Library

The library of the Faculty comprises reading rooms, book section, journal section, thesis section, electronic library and the Faculty website office. It holds over 35,000 Persian and non-Persian books, 4,000 volumes of thesis and dissertations and 75 complete issues of journal titles in Persian, French and English. To facilitate the access of professors, students and researchers to various scientific resources, the electronic library was inaugurated in 2008 with various electronic resources including e-books (Persian and non-Persian), academic papers from international and Iranian Journals, and Master's and PhD thesis and dissertations. There are three computer labs for undergraduates and graduate students
