Jackson Wang (traditional Chinese: 王嘉爾; born 28 March 1994), known mononymously as Jackson, is a Hong Kong-born Chinese rapper, singer and dancer, best known as a member of the South Korean boy band GOT7. He is a former national fencer (sabre) of the Hong Kong fencing team and was ranked 11th in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, winning first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in 2011.[2]
Early life
Jackson Wang was born in Hong Kong on 28 March 1994. Both of his parents were athletes from mainland China.[3]
Jackson began his fencing career at the age of 10. He was trained by his father as well as other professional coaches and achieved multiple awards as part of the Hong Kong national fencing team.[4][5] He won first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship in 2011.[2]
He attended the American International School in Hong Kong until eleventh grade.[6]
Although Jackson was born in British Hong Kong, he often self identifies as coming from China.
Career
Jackson moved to South Korea in July 2011, becoming a trainee under JYP Entertainment. He trained at JYP for two and a half years before making his debut as part of GOT7.
Prior to his debut, he made an appearance on the reality survival program WIN: Who Is Next, which aired on Mnet on 6 September 2013. The program was a competition between YG Entertainment trainees (now debuted as the groups Winner and iKON), whom he competed against for the episode alongside JYP trainees Mark, BamBam, and Yugyeom (now GOT7 members).
His first appearance as an official member of GOT7 was in a teaser clip for their debut single released on 6 January 2014. The single was released on 16 January.
Jackson's individual popularity rose after he appeared on SBS's reality series Roommate, for which he was awarded the Newcomer Award at the 2014 SBS Entertainment Awards.[7] He subsequently appeared on several other Korean variety shows such as Star King, Others' Taste, Law of the Jungle, Happy Together, Radio Star, and A Look At Myself. On 12 May 2015, Jackson was appointed as a new MC for SBS's music show Inkigayo, following the departure of ZE:A’s Kwanghee.
In December 2015, Jackson made his Chinese television debut as one of the MCs (alongside He Jiong) on the Chinese version of Please Take Care of My Refrigerator.[8] The Chinese version of the show, called Go Fridge, was well-received.[9] In March 2016, Jackson was appointed as the MC for Fresh Sunday, a new show on Hunan TV.[10]
On April 29th, GOT7 held their first concert in Seoul, where Jackson performed his self composed songs titled I Love It and WOLO (We Only Live Once) with members Yugyeom and Bambam.[11]
