Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (Bengali: জাতীয় কবি কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a government financed public university of Bangladesh.It is also known as JKKNIU.It is located at Nama para Battala, 1.5 kilometers from Trishal Upazila, some 22 kilometers from Mymensingh district and 100 kilometers from Dhaka. It is one & only cultural university in Bangladesh,with 3500 students

Information

This is the first and only public university established in memory of great national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam of Bangladesh. It is in a place popularly known as Battala (shade of banyan tree) at Trishal Upazilla headquarters in the district of Mymensigh.

The university was established by the government of Bangladesh on 1 March 2005, though the initiative was taken some years before firstly by a non-official group of socio-cultural local elites: Greater Mymensingh Cultural Forum. The university was originally conceived to be the first culture-based university in Bangladesh, but the University Act of 2006 made it a general university with a special focus on liberal arts education and activities.[3] The academic programme of the university started effective from 3 June 2007 with four departments under two faculties: the three departments of Bengali Language & Literature, English Language & Literature, and Music under the Faculty of Arts and the single Department of Computer Science and Engineering under the Faculty of Science & Engineering. Two more departments were established the next year under two new faculties: the Department of Accounting and Information Systems under the Faculty of Business Administration and the Department of Economics under the Faculty of Social Science. Two other departments were opened in the academic year 2009-2010 under two faculties: the Department of Finance and Banking under the Faculty of Business Administration and the Department of Fine Arts under the Faculty of Arts.Four additional departments were established in the academic year 2010-11 under four existing faculties, i.e., the Department of Dramatics under the Faculty of Arts, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering under the Faculty of Science & Engineering, Department of Public Administration under the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Department of Human Resource Management under the Faculty of Business Administration. Folklore department under Faculty of Arts will start in 2014.As of September 2014.In 2016 there are two department named film & media studies and the other is environmental science & engineering start in. there were in all fifteen departments under the four faculties of JKKNIU.

History

A project to establish the university was taken at a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Commission (ECNEC) in February 2004. Former prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, laid the foundation stone of the university on March 1, 2005. At a function organised for the birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the functions of the two faculties On 25 May 2007 .Its first batch class was started on 3 June 2007. On 23 June 2009, a bill was placed in the parliament to assign the president as chancellor replacing the prime minister. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamsur Rahman was the first vice-Chancellor of JKKNIU. The first batch consisted of 185 students in Bangla language and Literature department and English language and Literature department under arts faculty and Computer Science and Engineering department under science faculty.

[2] On 23 June 2009, a bill was placed in the parliament to assign the president as chancellor replacing the prime minister.[4]

Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering under the faculty of Science and Engineering has started from session 2006-2007 with 31 students. Now this department offers four-year bachelor's degrees of Computer Science and Engineering. M Sc in Computer Science and Engineering is also offered.Three batches are passed and at present five batches are running.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

Electronics and Communication Engineering Department was started later.The development of the present state of the society greatly depends on technological improvement. In this modern world to compete with the modern countries we need to be habituated ourselves with the use of technological equipments. The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is therefore aware of proving quality education. The department provides an excellent and bright young brand of teachers and officers who are deeply committed to the university to bring out best graduates in academic disciplines and human faculty, whose services and dedications are urgently needed for the reconstruction of our society. The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering under the faculty of Science and Engineering offers 4 (four) years BSc (Engg.) in Electronics and Communication Engineering. In future, M.Sc. in Electronics and Communication Engineering will be offered.

Accounting & Information Systems

Arts Building

Department of Accounting & Information Systems under the faculty of Business Administration has started from 20 April 2008(session 2007-2008) with 57 students. Now this department offers four-year BBA program, major in accounting. In future, MBA in Accounting & Information Systems will be offered. At present five batches are running.

Finance and Banking

The Department of Finance & Banking is one of the major departments under the Faculty of Business Administration. The department commenced with 60 students in December, 2009 and has currently swelled to 127 students and 4 teaching staffs.

Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management department one of the pioneer department of Business Administration Faculty. It is the first department of Bangladesh in any other public university, started its academic activities 2010-2011 session. The introduction of four year undergraduate programme makes it compatible with the international requirement of 16 years regular study for graduation. The Department of HRM offers undergraduate and post graduate programme for the brilliant students with clear commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of the theoretical concepts which are required in the practical circumstances. HRM department offers four years integrated BBA and MBA Program. Moreover, the department will offer in future M.Phil and Ph.D degrees.

Economics

Agnibeena Hall

Economics department started on 20 April in 2008, the second academic year of the university, with 58 students and two faculty members, Rehnuma Ferdous, assistant professor, and Md. Bakhtiar Uddin lecturer. Founding chairman of the department was the founding vice chancellor, Dr. Prof. Shamsur Rahman.The department offers B.S.S and MSS degree in Economics . The department follows an up-to-date syllabus which includes Macro, Microeconomics, International Trade, Health Economics, Labor Economics, Environmental Economics, Developmental Economics, Public Economics. First batch of the department has been completed their MSS degree. Many of them are working in various prestigious organizations. Like, Abdullah Al Mahmud working at AB Bank Limited as a Management Trainee Officer and Md. Shofiqul Islam working at the departmrnt of Economics of JKKNIU as a lecturer.

Music

The music department began on 3 June 2007, academic year 2006-07 with 50 students and two faculty members,Prof. Dr. Musharrat Shabnam, Ahmed Shakil Hahsmi (lecturer).Music practical and theoretical education is available, like Nazrul, Rabindra, folk, classical music, etc. Students can complete four-year (Hons) and one-year MA degree. Music department is the football champion team for two times (2008 & 2011) in inter departmental football champions league.

Fine Arts

The Fine Arts department started on 12 December 2009 with 35 students and four faculty members, Md. Safin Omar (assistant professor), Dulal Chandra Gain (assistant professor), Mohammad Emdadur Rashed Sukhon Tapon Kumar Sarkar (lecturer). Drawing and Painting and Design group are available in this department.

There are sufficient dormitory for tecaher residence.Now two buildings for teachres dormitory.Alongside constructions is going to make another building

Library

Now the library is tansfer to its newly constructed three storied building. Each floor consist of 7000 sqft. Temporarily the libaray is working in ground floor and first floor, soon third floor will be usable with a Muktizoddha Corner.

Health Services

The Medical Center of JKKNIU, located near the Teachers Dormitory, offers free medical service and free pathological examinations to students, teachers and staffs of the University and also family members of the teachers and staff.

Transport

There are 7 student buses are provided transport facilities for students. One bus and 3 microbus is providing transport Facilities for teachers. one bus provides Transport facilities to staff.

Cultural activities

As it is known as a Cultural University,various types of cultural events held in campus.The birthday of Nazrul is the biggest cultural program of JKKNIU.
