Jermaine Whitehead (born March 12, 1993) is an American football strong safety for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Auburn University.
High School career
Whitehead attended Amanda Elzy high school in Mississippi and played multiple positions throughout his high school career. During his junior year, he played cornerback and quarterback. He finished his junior season with 32 tackles, 3 interceptions, 2 forces fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries while also accounting for over 1,500 all-purpose yards, 9 rushing touchdowns, and 7 passing touchdowns.
As a senior, Whitehead attempted to put his effort on positions that gave him opportunity to play collegiality. While playing cornerback, he accumulated 61 tackles, 4 interceptions, and returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns. He also played running back and had 60 carries for 805-yards and 6 rushing touchdowns. Even though he was no longer a quarterback, he threw for 222-yards and 2 passing touchdowns.
College career
Whitehead played for the Auburn Tigers from 2011 to 2015. As a senior in 2015, he played in the first 7 games of the season as the Tiger's starting strong safety. After getting into an argument with Auburn's secondary coach, Charlie Habinson, he was suspended for the next 4 games. Once he returned, he spent the rest of his senior season playing solely on special teams.[1] He finished his senior year with 218 tackles and 9 interceptions.[2]
Professional career
NFL draft
Although Whitehead was one of the top safties in his draft class, he was projected to go undrafted.
San Francisco 49ers
After going undrafted during the 2015 NFL Draft, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers on May 5, 2015.[3] Whitehead was one of the last players cut by the 49ers was re-signed the next day to their practice squad. He spent the first 14 games of the regular season on the practice squad.
Baltimore Ravens
On December 23, 2015, the Baltimore Ravens signed Whitehead from the 49ers' practice squad.[4]
