Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition is a side-scroller released in 1994 by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive System and for its American equivalent, the Sega Genesis. It is the sequel to the popular game Jurassic Park.
Plot
After the events of Jurassic Park, Dr. Alan Grant escapes Isla Nublar on a helicopter. While the Costa Rican Army is blowing up parts of the island to destroy the park's dinosaurs, Grant spots a helicopter of armed InGen field agents arriving on the island. Fearing that the agents have plans to collect any remaining dinosaur eggs and DNA samples for a new dinosaur park, Grant attempts to contact the Costa Rican Army. Grant's helicopter crashes on the island after the pilot attempts to stop him. Grant survives the crash and must find a way to stop InGen.[2]
Gameplay
Like its predecessor, Rampage Edition is an action game with a platform setup. The game allows the player to choose between Dr. Grant or the Raptor.[3] As Dr. Grant, the player starts out with a dart gun that has infinite ammo. A wide selection of weapons is available for the player to obtain throughout the game, including an assault rifle, shotgun, flame-thrower, grenades, rocket launcher, and shock rifle.[4] As Dr. Grant, the player travels through the island while fighting InGen agents and dinosaurs until Grant can escape by boat.[3]
As the Raptor, the player can win battles with physical attacks such as biting and whipping opponents with the Raptor's tail. A bonus for the Raptor is to collect enough Lysine crates, which allows the player to go into "Raptor Rage" mode where the screen turns red and the player becomes invincible for a limited amount of time.[5] As the Raptor, the player can play all the same levels as Dr. Grant. The goal of the Raptor is to escape the island on a departing cargo boat to find a safe place to nest its eggs.[3]
Candy bars and med kits are collected throughout the game to replenish the player's health, while eggs, embryo containers and DNA samples are collected throughout the game for points.[4][5] Instead of the linear gameplay of the previous game, Rampage Edition allows players to choose from three levels to complete before they are allowed to proceed to the final levels in order to win the game.[6]
Levels
Aviary This level takes place inside a giant birdcage of sorts and appears to be quite similar to the aviary described in the novel. Grant must escape from a Pteranodon's nest and avoid being caught by the winged creatures. The Raptor on the other hand must make its way through the trees to reach the other side of the stage.
Savannah The Savannah is a flat, almost desert-like area. Both Grant and the Raptor must cross a long stretch of land avoiding other dinosaurs and agents. The most lethal enemy in this level is the helicopter which will appear at certain points. Playing as Grant also gives the player the option to progress through the stage while riding on the back of a Gallimimus.
Cargo Ship This is one of the three primary levels for Grant, while it is the final level for the Raptor. Besides dinosaurs, electrified water can be found on the ship which will cause damage. As Grant, the final leg of this level involves escaping a flooding cargo hold. The Raptor, however, will face a red version of itself. This is the closest element to a boss fight in this game.
Hidden Ruins This is one of the primary levels for the Raptor, but one of the final stages for Grant. It is set in a jungle environment and a series of ancient ruins. The level is very much the same for both Grant and the Raptor, except Grant will need to ride the Triceratops to escape.
Raptor Rapids One of the final levels for both Grant and the Raptor. Grant must steer his boat down the river, while the Raptor runs along the river's elaborate pipe system. As Grant proceeds, the environment changes, growing cold and blue, to almost toxic, until finally, the river almost appears to be on fire.
Burning River This is Grant's final stage. Grant must evade the deadly T. Rex while trying to steer his boat down a final expanse of water. The player cannot outrun the T. Rex, but can shoot it to stun it momentarily. This process must be repeated until Grant reaches the end of the level. There are no power ups in this level.
Reception
Mean Machines Sega magazine gave the game a 59 out of 100, and criticized the game for its graphics, sound effects and music.[1]
