Jurassic Park III: Island Attack (known as Jurassic Park III: Advanced Action[2] in Japan and Jurassic Park III: Dino Attack [1] in Europe; originally known as Jurassic Park III: Primal Fear[3]) is a video game for the Game Boy Advance. Unlike other Jurassic Park III video games, Island Attack is loosely based on the 2001 film of the same name.

Gameplay

After crash-landing on Isla Sorna, Dr. Alan Grant contacts the coast guard and is told to reach the island's coast to be rescued. Playing as Grant, the player's goal is to travel through eight areas of Isla Sorna to reach the coast.[4]

There are two types of levels: freeroam, and forward only. Every level uses freeroam, with the exception of The Plain, The Glen, and part of The Breeding Farm. These three levels also use cross-section camera angles, while the rest of the levels use an overview camera.

Levels

The levels in this game are as follows.

The start of the game. This level acts as a tutorial level. To pass the level, the player needs to defeat the Boss of this level, the Tyrannosaurus.

This level introduces a new enemy, Dilophosaurus. To pass the level, the player needs to restore power to the laboratory and get a motorcycle key by defeating the Boss of this level: a Dilophosaurus pack.

With the motorcycle from the previous level, the player needs to ride away from the laboratory and the pack of Velociraptor chasing Grant.

The player must go through the glen to pass the level while avoiding a group of Pachycephalosaurus. The wire is obtained at the beginning of the level, as is the tranquilizer.

Trapped inside the museum, the player needs to find another way out, while avoiding the Dilophosaurus and the Velociraptor.

The player must scale the mountain to pass the level. The wire is reused in this level. At the top of the mountain, the player needs to defeat the Pteranodon. After doing so, the player then needs to use the parachute and avoid Pteranodons while gliding off the mountain.

In this rainy level, the player must get out of the jungle to pass the level. Pteranodons make a reappearance in this level. To pass the level, the player must defeat the pack of Compsognathus.

The player must re-defeat the previous Bosses: Tyrannosaurus, Dilophosaurus, and, if wanted, Compsognathus, and re-escape the Spinosaurus to make it to the boat and get off the island.

Differences from the film

The game was only loosely based on the film Jurassic Park III. Therefore, there were some differences.

Reception

Jennifer Beam of AllGame rated the game two and a half stars out of five and wrote, "Dr. Grant's character, though easily controlled, can essentially do one of two things: tirelessly fire his stun gun upon the dinos who in turn inflict ten times the damage on his health meter, or run like heck. Running is usually the best option, if you could even call it an option. Yet, he won't be winning any marathons since he usually escapes by only a hair." Beam praised the game's "fairly realistic" dinosaurs, but criticized their dull color schemes. Beam also wrote, "Not much excitement is generated from the background music and sound effects are lacking."[5]
