MLG Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship: Columbus, also referred to as MLG Columbus 2016[1] was a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major held by Major League Gaming ("MLG") throughout March 29 to April 3, 2016 in the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, US.[2][3] It was the first CS:GO Major in North America as well as the first run by Major League Gaming, who previously ran an exhibition CS:GO tournament at X Games Aspen 2015.[4] It was announced on February 23, 2016 that MLG Columbus 2016 would be the first Counter-Strike tournament with a $1,000,000 prize pool.[5]

In total, 16 teams competed. Listed below are the top eight finishers at DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca 2015 (known as "Legends") who received direct invitations to Columbus and the eight teams that emerged from the offline qualifiers (known as "Challengers").[6]

Group Stage
The four groups were announced through MLG's social media accounts on March 10–11, 2016. Each group was seeded to contain a team who placed 1st–4th at DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca 2015, a team who placed 5–8th at DreamHack Open Cluj–Napoca 2015, a team who went undefeated in the offline qualifiers, and a team who won one of the final decider matches in the offline qualifiers.[7]

Summary
On day 3 of the Major, the group stages had ended with Luminosity Gaming and Ninjas in Pyjamas advancing from Group A, Team Liquid and Fnatic advancing from Group B, Astralis and Counter Logic Gaming advancing from Group C and Natus Vincere and Virtus.Pro advancing from Group D.[8]
- Group A
In Group A, the teams to advance were Luminosity Gaming and Ninjas in Pyjamas. Flipsid3 Tactics won neither of their games but both went into overtime. The game against Ninjas in Pyjamas saw one overtime, ending at a 19-17 loss to Ninjas in Pyajamas[9] and the game against Mousesports saw five overtimes, ending at a 31-28 loss to Mousesports. Luminosity was undefeated during the Group Stages, winning against both Ninjas in Pyjamas in a 16-5 match[10] and a 16-13 win over Mousesports.[11] Mousesports was eliminated after winning against Flipsid3 Tactics but losing against Ninjas in Pyjamas and Luminosity. Ninjas in Pyjamas won all their games except the match against Luminosity.
- Group B
In Group B, the teams to advance were Team Liquid and Fnatic. Team Liquid was flawless, winning both of its games against Fnatic (22-19)[10] and FaZe Clan (16-11).[12]
- Group C
In Group C, the teams to advance were Astralis and Counter Logic Gaming.
- Group D
In Group D, the teams to advance were Natus Vincere who went flawless (2-0) and Virtus.Pro who went (2-1).
Playoffs Bracket
The playoffs bracket was announced on March 30, 2016. Each quarterfinals match was seeded to contain one top seed and one second seed from the group stage.[13]
