Availability

MTV Base is available in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Ireland, Nigeria and West Africa, Kenya, South Africa. The channel was previously available in the Netherlands, Germany, Russia and other European countries but was replaced by MTV Dance in some territories from March 2008. There are two different feeds of MTV Base Africa, with one catering for the South African audience and another for rest of Africa, although there have been criticisms that the rest of Africa feed caters to only Nigerian music, which MTV Base has denied, stating that Nigerian music is popular across Africa, hence why it gets a lot of airplay.

A European version will launch in 2015.[2]

MTV Base in South Africa

On 3 July 2013 Viacom International Media Networks (Africa) launched an opt-out feed of MTV Base Africa in South Africa. This opt-out feed is called MTV South Africa.[3] The channel broadcasts MTV Base Africa into the territory with unique programming, advertising and sponsorship opportunities for South African audiences. The channel will increase localized South African content featuring artists and localized music programming with a South African theme, all other programming on MTV South Africa will air as simulcast of the existing MTV Base Africa channel. The channel is also served by a localized South African website (www.mtv.co.za) and mobile website (m.mtv.co.za). The opt-out feed will also feature local presenters.[4]

As of 2015, MTV Base South Africa is being marketed as MTV Africa.
