Nandi Bagan (Bengali: নন্দীবাগান) is a southern neighborhood of Kolkata, India. The Postal Index Number code of the area is 700 075 and 700 078.[1] This is mainly a residential area surrounded with Kasba, Haltu, Garfa, Jadavpur, Dhakuria and Salimpur. This is a traditionally upper-middle-class neighborhood situated around the NandiBagan community playground. However, with the newly constructed Prince Anwar Shah Road connector with the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, property prices have skyrocketed in the area. The area is covered by the Kasba Police Station of the Kolkata Police Force. The Haltu Post Office serves the area.

History

Nandi Bagan was a part of the early settlements of Hindu immigrants from East Bengal who were displaced from their homeland during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The area saw rapid development after the construction of the new bridge (Bijon Setu) in 1978 connecting the area to Ballygunge. With the economic boom in India in 1991, the area started attracting lots of investments from property developers. Gradually, this area was brought under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation as wards 106, 107 and 108. With property prices soaring in the area, the original Bangladeshi immigrants were forced to move further south to areas like Narendrapur and Rajpur Sonarpur and Nandi Bagan became primarily the residential area of the rising urban, educated middle-class population. The area was under the West Bengal Police till 2011 and was brought under the purview of the Kolkata Police Force by the Government in October 2011.
