Nizāmābād pronunciation is a city in the Nizamabad district of the Indian state of Telangana. The city is a municipal corporation and the headquarters of Nizamabad district.[3] It is also the mandal headquarters of Nizamabad mandal.[4] Nizamabad is one of the major urban centres and the third most populous and third largest city in the state, next to Hyderabad and Warangal. The city stood at 2nd position in the state and 82nd position in the country for implementation of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.[5] Nizamabad is also one of the 100 cities of India, which is considered for Smart City project.[6]
History
Nizamabad was founded in the year 1905[7] when Nizam's Dominion were recognized, where up to it was known as Indur.[8][9] The Nizam of Hyderabad ruled over the Deccan region during 18th century,
Nizamabad was a part of princely State of Hyderabad in 1724 and continued to be part of the Nizam's dominions until 1948.[10] After India gained independence in 1947, the Indian Armed Forces annexed Hyderabad and ended the rule of the Nizam in Operation Polo.[11] It was during 1876 Nizamabad became a separate district when the districts in Hyderabad State were reorganized by Salar Jung-I, the then prime minister. In 1905 the railway line between Secundrabad and Manmad was laid.[12] The city was named after Nizam ul Mulk, the fourth Nizam of Hyderabad state. The Nizam Sagar dam was constructed in 1923 across the Manjira River at the village of Achampet which irrigates 250,000 acres (1,000 km2; 390 sq mi) of land in Nizamabad District.[13]
Etymology
The name Nizamabad means "Long Live the Nizam", the word is derived from Nizam meaning Nizam of Hyderabad and Abad means Long Live. Sometimes the place is also referred as The City of Nizams.[14]
Geography
Nizamabad is located at 18°41′N 78°6′E / 18.683°N 78.100°E.[15] Nizamabad is bounded on the north by Adilabad district, on the east by Karimnagar district, on the south by Medak district, and on the west by Nanded district of Maharashtra State and Bidar of Karnataka State. The geographical area of the city is 50 square kilometres (19 sq mi) of which 40 square kilometres (15 sq mi) is under Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and rest 10 square kilometres (3.9 sq mi) is newly merged from Nizamabad Rural.[1]Gandhi Chowk is the centre of the city.
Climate
As the city is situated at a considerable distance from the coast, the climate is tropical savanna with most rainfall from June to October.In winter there is less rainfall than in summer. In the month of May 2015, Nizamabad recorded 46.1 °C (115.0 °F) which was highest recorded temperature in Telangana during this summer.[16] The temperature goes as low as 5 °C (41 °F) while the average is 18 °C (64 °F) during winter, while in summer the temperature rises as high as 47 °C (117 °F) and the average is 46 °C (115 °F). Average annual temperature is 27 °C (81 °F).The average annual rainfall is 1108 mm.[17]

Demographics
As of the 2011 India census,[19] Nizāmābād had a population of 310,467. Males constituted 51 percent of the population, and females constituted 49 percent. Nizamabad has an average literacy rate of 80.31 percent, higher than the national average of 74.04 percent; male literacy is 86.82 percent and female literacy is 73.83 percent. In Nizamabad, 13 percent of the population is under six years of age. The 2014 House Hold Survey by the Government of Telangana recorded the population as 487,709.[20]
Administration
Municipal corporation
The Nizamabad Municipal Corporation is the municipal governing body of the city of Nizamabad in the India state of Telangana. The municipal corporation consists of democratically-elected members, is headed by a mayor and administers the city's infrastructure and administration. The Municipality was constituted in the year 1931 and upgraded as special grade Municipality in the year 1987. The Nizamabad Municipality upgraded as Nizamabad Municipal Corporation on 5 March 2005 vide GONo:109
E-Governance services
For providing facilities to the people the Government of Telangana started MeeSeva[23] (At your service) Service Centres all around the city and the state. The main purpose of this facility was to bring public services closer to home. MeeSeva provides online signed digital certificates like Income Certificates, Land Records and other Registration Records. These records are further stored online for database.[24] Nizamabad along with Hyderabad are the only districts[25] in the Telangana state which have their own Regional Passport Offices (Passport Seva Kendras), these offices carter the need of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Rangareddy, Khammam, Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda of Telangana state.[26][27]
Law and order
The Nizamabad Police is the local law enforcement agency for the city of Nizamabad and is headed by the city police DIG and SP. The city police traces its origins to 1847 under Hyderabad State. In Telangana state, Nizamabad was the first city to get CCTV surveillance system. In 2012, with a plan to bring the city under the radar 22 CCTV cameras were installed at 11 important junctions without taking a single penny from the government.[28] Additionally more 50 CCTV cameras were installed in 2015 for strict monitoring of traffic and to avoid conflicts between the communities during the festive season of Eid Ul Azha and Ganesh Chaturti.
Healthcare
Being the 3rd largest city in the state, Nizamabad is known for its medical care in northern Telangana region. Government General Hospital is one of the biggest government hospital in the state, serving patients from the cities and neighbouring districts like Nanded and Adilabad.[29] Khaleelwadi, also known as Doctor's Lane, is a locality & a hospital clustered area comprising more than 200 major private hospitals[30] and many laboratories.Considering the better infrastructure and resources available, Government Medical College was established in 2012. There are speciality hospitals for maternity care, chest hospitals, Meghna Hospital for Dental care, Indur Cancer Hospital. Apart from these multi-speciality hospitals in the city, Pragati Hospital is one of the only hospitals among the neighbouring districts which has recently established a heart transplantation wing.
Transport
Roads
The city consists of 731 kilometres (454 mi) of roads and is connected by roadways to all the major cities of India.[31] The major highways that pass through the city are:
The National Highway 7, the longest national highway in India passes through the city which connects Varanasi – Kanyakumari. National Highway 16, 500 kilometres (310 mi) long, starts at Nizamabad and passes through Karimnagar to Jagadalpur in the state of Chhattisgarh.[32]
Bus service is one of the important modes of transportation in Nizamabad. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) runs around 700[33] buses from the city on a daily basis, with a bus for every 15 minutes to Hyderabad. They also offer a premium service, with Mercedes Benz buses, from Nizamabad to Hyderabad and Bangalore.[34] TSRTC also connects to other major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Warangal, Tirupathi, Vijayawada etc.
Rail
The Nizamabad Junction Railway Station is located on the Secunderabad-Manmad section of Hyderabad Division of the South Central Railway Zone (SCR) and is one of the major stations on Secunderabad-Manmad railway line. Nizamabad has rail connectivity with major cities of India like Secunderabad, Mumbai, Banglore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Kazipet, Manmad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool, Cuddapah, Tirupati, Erode, Kollam, Pune, Aurangabad, Ahmedabad, Surat and Bhopal. It has frequent connectivity to Nanded and Kacheguda. The station is served by 30 [35] trains every day.[35] There are also multiple weekly connections to other major cities of India. State capital Hyderabad is situated 160 km from train.[36]
Nizamabad railway station was upgraded as junction connecting northern, southern and western India lines in mid 2016.[37] After the completion of railway line from Nizamabad-Peddapalli via Armoor and Karimnagar, the station paved its way into Delhi-Chennai line which is known as Grand Trunk Route. Nizamabad will have direct connectivity to national capital New Delhi and the distance between Secunderabad to New Delhi and Nizamabad to Karimnagar shall be reduced to a large extent.
Due to overgrowth on the western side of the city,the Jankampet Junction railway station falls under the administration of Nizamabad.
Airport
An airport is proposed at Jakranpally near Nizamabad.[38]
Economy
There are many industries in Nizamabad.[39] There are also industries in the public sector as well. Some of them include Nizam Sugar Ltd., Indur Green power Pvt. Ltd., and Nester Corn Products private limited. Nizam Sugar Factory was the biggest sugar factory in Asia during the reign of Nizams.[40] Telangana state government has set up Industrial Parks in Sarangpur and Nehru Nagar on the outskirts of city.
Real estate
Real estate in Nizamabad is booming since recent years[41] with large number of high rise apartments and commercial complexes as high as 10 floors are under construction,as the city is quickly spreading along its peripheral area the real estate industry is rapidly growing.[33]
Culture
Nizamabad's culture enriched under the patronage of Nizams.The city has a diverse culture with major proportion of city population being Hindus and Muslims and this mixing of religions has also resulted in many festivals being celebrated in Nizamabad such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali of Hindu tradition and Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha by Muslims.Telugu and Urdu are major languages spoken by the city people, however English is also widely used for communication purpose. Even though the city has different religious communities, the people of Nizamabad are known for their harmony, cultural amalgamation and religious unity .[14]
Cuisine
Nizamabadi cuisine mainly comprises rice, wheat and meat dishes. South Indian cuisine which include Dosa, Vada, Puri and Idly are common breakfast items. Hyderabadi biriyani with its blend of Mughlai and Arab influences and Tahari are other dishes. The traditional food items like Harees and Haleem are common foods during Ramadan.[42][43]
Education
Nizamabad is a major education centre in Telangana. Many engineering colleges are located in and around the city. Vijay Rural Engineering College, Nizamabad (VREC), affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) is the reputed engineering college located in Telangana. Kakatiya Institutions of Nizamabad is a group of well known schools & colleges in state of Telangana and the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, as they have been constantly fetching state top ranks. Some other major educational institutions for higher education are Arkay College of Engineering and Technology,[44] Kshatriya College of Engineering,[45] Kakatiya Engineering College for Women, Ganga Pharmacy college,Government Medical College,[46] Nishitha Degree College, etc. Many students from neighbouring districts of Nanded, Adilabad and Karimnagar take up admissions here for their higher education. Also 15 Model schools were established in the year 2013 by central government in EBBs, to uplift the education system & provide free education in English medium.
Telangana University is a public university under the Government of Telangana, located at Dichpally, 15 km from the city. Telangana University alone has 149 college affiliations of which 86 colleges are in Nizamabad and 63 colleges in Adilabad district.[47] The university has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chicago State University of USA for exchange of students and teachers. The MoU was signed by the officials of the two universities in the presence of Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao.[48]
RGUKT, Basar popularly known as IIIT Basar is an autonomous institution located 35 km from Nizamabad. The official name of the institute is Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies. It offers six-year integrated B.Tech programme with three semesters every year for those passing SSC, for award of dual degrees in different specializations of engineering and science.[49][50]
Tourism
- Nizamabad Fort is situated on the southwest of the city which was built by Rashtrakuta Kings in around 10th century, the fort was captured by Asaf Jahis who were the Nizams of Hyderabad, who then rebuilt the fort.[51][52]
- Archaeological and Heritage Museum was opened in October 2001 and is situated in the Tilak Garden premises which is opened seasonally. The Museum houses various artifacts and antiquities representing the evolution of human civilization from Paleolithic to Vijayanagara Empire(i.e. 16th. A.D). The Museum is divided into three sections, namely Archaeological Section, Sculptural gallery and Bronze and Decorative gallery. Bidri articles and arms and weapons of extensive variety are also exhibited.[13]
- Alisagar is a park and tourist attraction which is 13 km from Nizamabad and 2 km (1.2 mi) off the Nizamabad-Bodhan road.[53] The garden is spread across a large 33 acres of area,it has a deer park, trekking and water sports facility. It also has a hilltop guest house built by Nizam and is under renovation as of 2015.
- Ashok Sagar is a lake, park and tourist attraction situated in Jankampet area, 07 km from centre of the city. It has a beautiful rock garden with illuminated rocks and has excellent boating facilities.[50]
- Badapahad dargah is one of the oldest Muslim pilgrim centres, built in the memory of Hazrat Syed Hussaini, built on top of a hillock, located at a distance of 38 km from the city.
Notable people
- Malavath Purna is a 13-year-old student from Nizamabad who became the youngest girl ever to climb Mount Everest when she reached the peak on 25 May 2014. She was accompanied by Sadanapalli Anand, a 17-year-old student from Khammam.[54]
- Nikhat Zareen is an Indian boxer who won gold medals at international boxing tournaments.
- Yendala Soundarya, member of Indian women's national field hockey team.[55]
- Sagar Bhogaraju is a young scientist who performed research work in structural biology and biochemistry which was presented at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich, Germany.[56]
