Premium train
A Premium Train is a type of express train service run by the Indian Railways to connect metros with other important cities.[1]
It is quite similar to Rajdhani trains,[2] that stops at a limited number of stops in comparison to other express services on the same or similar routes.[3] However, Premium trains run on the busiest routes[4] and the train has a dynamic fare structure (i.e., vary according to demand and seat availability; much like that done by airlines),[5] which is first of its kind in Indian Railways.[6]
The Premium trains are among the fastest trains in India after Shatabdi Express, Duronto Express and Rajdhani Express to which they get highest priority on the Indian railway network.
Overview
The Premium AC special train from Mumbai to Delhi was the first train which was launched on 24 December 2013 during festive season of Christmas and New Year.[2] The train's maiden journey earned 48 percent more than the Mumbai — Delhi Rajdhani that ran during the same period.[7] Encouraged by the successful run of the Mumbai-Delhi premium train,[6] In Railway budget 2014, Sadananda Gowda, the railway minister announced 5 more such premium AC-special trains on busy routes.[8]
