Puspuni
Puspuni or Pushpuni is an annual agricultural festival observed on full moon day of the month of Pusa in western region of Odisha.[1] [2][3][4] It is also known as “Chher-Chhera” locally.
Etymology
The other name "Cher-Chera" might have been derived from "char-char" (a local drum, also known as "dulduli"). Drum or Dulduli baja is an integrated part of the Puspuni festival as drum beating and dancing on the street is a must during the celebration.
Observation
Groups of boys and girls go from door to door to raise money and to organize feasts and with songs, dance and musical performance. Being a cultivation festival the farmer community celebrate it with feasting of newly harvested rice and other crops, and merrymaking. During this time the annual agreements of land laborers or halia (plough-men) comes to an end and who receive payments from landowners. Fresh agreements are finalized for the ensuing year.
