St Joseph's College is a government-aided, Christian minority, co-educational college in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, about 3 km north of downtown Darjeeling. It grew out of St. Joseph's School established in 1888. The college began in 1927 when it was affiliated to Calcutta University. In 1962 the college was affiliated with the newly established University of North Bengal. Undergraduate programs include liberal arts, commerce and science, as well as business administration and computer application. A master's degree in English has been offered since 2006. The college boasts a host of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to expand the students' potential.

History

The College in 1894

In 1927 the college was affiliated to Calcutta University. By 1949 it was fully accredited to offer courses in B.A. and B.Sc. In 1962 with the establishment of the University of North Bengal the college was affiliated to that university. In 1963 St. Joseph's moved to new school premises at the present site.

Courses offered

Courses offered include honours in English, Nepali, political science, economics,[1] history, botany, zoology, physics,[2] chemistry, mathematics, accounting.

Besides these the college offers eleven career-oriented programmes as add-on courses.

Activities & clubs

The research Centre for Studies in Rural Economy, Appropriate Technology and Environment (CREATE) has signed a memorandum of understanding with International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) at Indiana University, USA. Another such memorandum was signed with University of Manitoba in October 2002.

National Cadet Corps (NCC): students interested in a military career, character formation, and training in a disciplined life are encouraged to join the college units of the NCC (boys and girls).

National Service Scheme (NSS): those interested in social-service and welfare by helping the less privileged in society, as well as in team building, character formation and service to the college are encouraged to join the college unit of the NSS.

All India Catholic University Students Federation (AICUF): students who wish to develop a critical and creative approach to life, to be involved in studies and activities linked to broader social issues and struggles with a view to becoming a constructive force within the college and society, are encouraged to join the AICUF unit, irrespective of their religion.

Women’s Cell: this was set up as part of the AICUF to bring about greater awareness and responsibility among students about issues affecting women, keeping in mind the motto of AICUF: “We were born in an unjust world and we will not leave it as we have found it.” Girls are encouraged to join the Women’s Cell to become a creative task force to bring about equality in society.

Current Affairs Forum (CAF): it aims to make students aware of the changing socio-political, cultural and economic trends by organizing seminars, wall paper magazines and projects.

Nature Club: it generates environmental awareness amongst members of the college community through various activities in and around the college.

Career Guidance Cell: it organizes campus recruitment interviews and helps students proceed to higher studies.

Information and Technology Club (ITC): organized by the Department of Computer Science /Application, ITC raises awareness of the latest developments in the IT field through seminars, quizzes and other programmes.

Film Club: it strives to energize students with a more holistic education, with the logo FFOCUS - Film Focus on Challenging Unjust Society. Its aims are:

Management Club: a part of the Business Administration department, it sponsors practical exercises and visits to industry to foster managerial skills.

Lab Assisted Personality Schooling (LAPS): LAPS uses a language lab to improve language skills and to develop more effective listeners and communicators. Film reviews and group discussions are used to foster social etiquette and other soft skills leading to personality development.

Sports and Games: these are organized seasonally and all students are encouraged to participate.
