Sulfadimethoxine (trade name Di-Methox, Albon) is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Albon is produced by Pfizer Animal Health and is available as an oral suspension, tablet or bolus. It is used to treat many infections including treatment of respiratory, urinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections. It is most frequently used in veterinary medicine. Sulfadimethoxine inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) from para-aminobenzoic acid. It is also commonly used for the treatment of coccidiosis in many species.[1]
Sulfadimethoxine is approved in Russia for use in humans, including children, and has been successfully used there for more than 35 years.[2] It is widely available in Russia as an over-the-counter drug manufactured by a number of Russian pharmaceutical companies.
Side Effects
Some side effects include:
- Redness of the eye[3]
- Discharge from the eye
- Other symptoms related to the eye
- Bleeding
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Increased thirst is common[4]
- Incessant itch
Animals should be kept well hydrated to prevent the formation of sulfa crystals in the animal's urine.

- pneumonia
- pyometra
- anal gland infections
- dermatitis
- wounds and abscesses
- enteritis
- salmonellosis
- enteritis associated with coccidiosis in dogs
Actions
It has been shown to be effective against streptococci, klebsiella, proteus, shigella, staphylococci, escherichia, and salmonella.
