Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC) (Sindhi: ٿڌومل شاهاڻِي انجنيئرنگ ڪاليج), is an engineering and research institute in Mumbai, India. Founded in 1983,[1] the year in which the Government of Maharashtra granted permission to start private engineering colleges in the state,[2] it is the first and the oldest private (government unaided) engineering institute affiliated to the federal University of Mumbai;[1] one of the oldest universities of Asia. The institute is commonly referred to as TSEC (pronounced Tee-Sec). It is located in the heart of India's financial capital and is within a few kilometres radius from the National Stock Exchange of India.

TSEC is ranked 28th in the list of Top 50 Private Engineering Colleges of India by Mint,[3] India's second largest business newspaper and the official partner of The Wall Street Journal in India. With over 90% of the total 3400+ engineering colleges of India being private colleges,[4] TSEC is among the top one percent of the private engineering colleges of India. Internationally, the University of Mumbai was ranked 41 among the top 50 Engineering Schools of the world by America's news broadcasting firm Business Insider in the year 2012 and was the only university in the list from the five emerging BRICS nations viz Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.[5] In the QS University Rankings : BRICS for 2015, University of Mumbai was ranked at 58 Overall, at 3 in terms of papers per faculty, 18 for employer reputation, 23 for faculty staff with PhD and 46 for citations per paper.[6] It was ranked fifth[7] in the list of top ten universities of India by India Today in the year 2013 and 3rd best Multi Disciplinary University in India in the QS ranking of Indian universities for 2013.[6] The university of Mumbai has been given the highest ranking of five stars / ("A" grade) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) [8] of India.

TSEC is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education with the highest grade A and is pioneered to be the first college among various engineering colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai to start the following courses :

Approved by the Directorate of Technical Education of Maharashtra on 16 September 1983,[1] TSEC is one of the oldest private engineering colleges of India and was among the first few institutes in the country to offer undergraduate level studies in specializations of Computer Engineering, Information Technology and Biomedical Engineering. The department of Biomedical Engineering is one of the oldest in India [11] and was set up in 1983,[1] much before IIT Kharagpur (1986),[12] IIT Madras (2004) [13] and IIT Kanpur (2001);[14] whereas the first batch of Computer Engineering graduates passed out in 1988,[1] two years before VJTI (1990),[15] and a few years after IIT Madras (1987) [16] and IIT Kharagpur (1982).[17] The undergraduate course in Information Technology was started in 1998,[1] three years before VJTI (2001).[15] The departments of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering as well as Chemical Engineering were established in the year 1983,[1] whereas that of Biotechnology was established in the year 2004.[18]

At the desktop of achievements of the institute lies the starting of the Ph.D. programme by the University of Mumbai in the department of Information Technology .[19] They never update placement details on their website and by looking at website TSEC is mystery for non Mumbai people

History

Named by one of Mumbai's most respected philanthropists, Dada Kishinchand T Shahani after his father, Thadomal Shahani; Thadomal Shahani Engineering College was founded by the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board in the year 1983. The Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board, well known as HSNC board, is a charitable trust established by the Sindhi Community in 1922. It currently manages and administers 27 institutes under its umbrella.

The HSNC Board has roots going back over 60 years. The board was managing the National College in Hyderabad (Sind) long before the partition of India, In true spirit of their times, the members of the Board worked to ensure the nations integrity and honour during the National Movement of Indian Independence. After the Partition of the country in 1947, the members of Sindhi Hindu Community migrated to India. Principal K.M. Kundnani, with the vision and mission to promote participation in education, initiated the efforts for starting a college in Mumbai. With active support and encouragement from Late Barrister Hotchand G. Advani, the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board came into existence in 1949 at Bandra, Mumbai. Late Barrister H.G. Advani was the Founder President and Late Principal K.M. Kundnani was the Founder Secretary and Founder Principal of the first college started by the board known as the Rishi Dayaram National College, Bandra, Mumbai.

Governing council

The institute is currently presided by Niranjan Hirandani,[20] Managing Director of Hiranandani Constructions. Indu Shahani, Director of Academics at Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board is responsible for enhancing the academic standards of all the institutes managed by the trust, including Thadomal Shahani Engineering College.

Kishu H Mansukhani is a trustee and past President of the Board.[21] Members of the Board are Anil Harish, who is also a past President of the Board, Maya Shahani, and Akhil Shahani.

Vision 2020

In 2013, the institute launched a pilot project called "Vision 2020" to identify and implement measures establishing TSEC as one of the top twenty research-led engineering institutes of India and among the leading thirty technical institutes in Asia by 2020. As a part of the project, the governing council as well as the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board decided to extend full support to the institute, financially as well as operationally, and create an alumni endowment which could be used for enhancing research based activities within the institute, tie up with renowned Indian and global universities and companies for research & exchange programs and add infrastructure for the same. It was also unanimously decided to invite renowned researchers and professors from leading universities of Mumbai and rest of the world as guest lecturers or part-time faculty to the institute, deliver distance learning courses using enhanced technology and encourage them to take up temporary or permanent positions on the institute's advisory council.

Academic departments

The College is developed up to Doctorate level and offers a Doctor of Philosophy Programme (Ph.D.) in Information Technology discipline and a Full-Time two year master's course i.e. Master of Engineering (ME) in Computer Engineering for which it has 25 seats. TSEC offers a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (BE) course in Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology. Its active student community hosts branches of several professional societies including IEEE(USA), NSS, ACM, CSI, ISTE, IETE, IIChE, etc.

Apart from these, TSEC also has departments of Mathematics, Physics and Humanities which have supporting roles and conduct foundation courses for various degree programs.

The department of Mathematics stresses on subjects including but not limited to algebra, geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, statistics and probability theory.

The department of Humanities at TSEC stresses heavily on communication skills, soft skills, presentation techniques, body language and vocational skills.TSEC has stressed on English as a global language since its inception as compared to universities in other countries of Asia such as China partly due to the reason that the older universities such as University of Mumbai were established in India by the British much before the country's independence in 1947 and were modelled on the Universities of England. Indians are one of the highest scorers of English language tests such as TOEFL(Test Of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS(International English Language Testing System), etc. As per the data from the official website of TOEFL, Indians are second only to Singapore among Asians with a total mean score of 91 and China being way behind at 77.[22] Moreover, with TSEC being centrally located in a global metropolis like Mumbai, students are known to get acquainted with better communication and presentation skills as compared to rest of the engineering institutes of India and Asia.

Grading system

TSEC follows the Percentage System as followed by the University of Mumbai.

Percentage Classification / Division
70% and above Distinction / Outstanding
60% and above but below 70% First class
50% and above but below 60% Second Class
40% and above but below 50% Pass Class
