The Vels University is located in Pallavaram, a suburb of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

History

Vael's Educational Trust was founded by Dr. Ishari K Ganesh in 1992 in the memory of his late father Shri.Isari Velan, a former minister in the state government of M. G. Ramachandran. University status was conferred to the Vel's Group of Institutions, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India in 2008.

The school is equipped with a separate hardware laboratory to solve the purpose of assembly language programming which includes microprocessor trainer kits and interfacing devices. Periodic inter-university seminars and symposia are conducted. For the benefit of outgoing students, the institution’s placement cell has tied up with software houses for conducting campus interviews.[10] <raj>

School of Management Studies

The Department of Management Studies had its beginning in 1998. The department is now branded as the Vels Institute of Business Administration (VIBA). The institute is engaged in offering a two-year postgraduate programme in Business Administration (MBA). This course was accepted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India.

The teaching – learning process

Learning sessions are supported by group discussions, case analysis, paper presentations, video deliberations, seminars, management games, business diplomacy, role play, in-basket exercises, and industry quizzes. Every student and staff is given a lap-top and the teaching is done with the help of Power-point using LCD projectors. The class rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi Internet.

The Department of Physiotherapy was established in 1993 under Vel’s College of Physiotherapy and now has been brought under the university.

Infrastructure facilities

The school is equipped with therapeutic laboratories, a research laboratory with EMG and treadmill facilities, and an anatomy museum with all soft parts and cadaver for the dissection of students.[11]

The School of Life Sciences comprises the Department of Microbiology, the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Bio-informatics.

Separate laboratories are provided for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Isolated working spaces have been provided to perform Mycology, Virology, Bacteriology, Immunology and Molecular biology experiments. Instruments include Phase contrast microscope with photo micrographic equipment, Dark field microscopy, Refrigerated high-speed centrifuge, ELISA washer & reader, Electrophoretic equipment, Biological safety cabinets – one class 1 & other class 3 are also available. Advance instruments like Fluorescent Microscope, UV-spectrophotometer, Gel documentation system; PCR, CO2 incubator, Batch fermentor and HPLC can be utilized at the common laboratory.

Department of Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is a branch which uses techniques of Information Technology to solve biological problems at the molecular level.

The department is endowed with equipment to research the molecular nature of biomolecules. The department has a lab consisting of IBM machines loaded with a bioinformatics workbench coupled with highspeed broadband, enabling use of biological software for research purposes. Students can access hundreds of scientific journals on their lab desktop via commercial access, subscribed by the University.

Vels Academy of Maritime Studies

Vel's Academy of Maritime Studies(VAMS) is based in Pallavaram. A Captain Superintendent led faculty include lecturers with marine background and instructors who are experienced on ships and ashore. VAMS is the first institute in South India to be awarded an ISO 9001:2000 certification by Lloyd's Register of Quality Assurance, London.

Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (VAMET)

Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (VAMET) is based in Thalambur. The campus has library facilities and laboratories with facilities for research and practice on Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Machinery, Control Systems, Power Electronics, Electronic devices, Electronic Communication and Digital devices.

Marine Cadets

Ship-In-Campus Maritime Academies across India are required by the Director General of Shipping to build a "Ship-in-Campus" to facilitate the training cadets to familiarize with real world situations. VAMET has acquired an Akasaka 6-cylinder 4-stroke diesel main engine, rated at 2200 hp, at 250 rpm to meet the Director General's requirement. It has installed this main engine in the first all steel ship-in-campus ever to be built in India which is now fully operational.

VAMET has a full mission engine simulator within the Ship-in-Campus, for the training of Marine Engineering cadets, simulating conditions exactly as on board a ship.

HND UK Cources in collaboration with Glasgow College of Nautical Studies

The School of Maritime Studies (Nautical Science) and the School of Maritime Studies (Marine Engineering) are collaborating with Glasgow College of Nautical Studies (GCNS), Glasgow, Scotland, UK, fully residential Higher National Diploma (HND) Courses in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering respectively. The Higher National Diploma courses are approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) UK, and the awarding authority is the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), Scotland, UK.

The first year of the HND Nautical Science and Marine Engineering Courses will be conducted at VAMS, Chennai, and the second year of study will be conducted at GCNS. Thereafter, 15 months (for Nautical Science) and 6 months (for Marine Engineering) of sea services are required to qualify the Watch Certificate of Competency examinations in the UK to be as Deck Officer in the Nautical Science stream and to be as Engineer Officer in the Marine Engineering stream.

Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital (Under Vels Group of Institutions)

Sri Venkateswara Dental College and Hospital was established in 2007. It is approved by the Government of India and the Dental Council of India, New Delhi, and affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. The Venkateswara Nursing college is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, and affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

The main objective of the institution is to produce dental surgeons and provide dental treatment to the rural population.

Sri Venkateswara Dental College & Hospital is headed by dentist, Dr. Lodd Mahendra as Principal and Dr.V.Rangarajan, as Vice Principal.

Labs include Biochemistry lab, Anatomy Museum, Anatomy Dissection Lab, Dental Clinic, Physiology Lab, Haemotology Lab, Pre-Clinical Prosthodontia Lab, Minor Operation Theatre, X-Ray Lab, Phantom Head Lab, Audio Visual Room, Computer Lab and Library.

Rural dental health programmes are conducted by the institution, which are compulsory for the students to gain clinical experience. Rural areas benefit by the institution's Community Dentistry Programme. The institution has a tie-up with the Government Hospital, Tambaram at Chromepet for practical training and clinical studies.

Facilities are offered for indoor and outdoor games. The students are trained by a Physical Director and his team of assistants. The students participate in inter-collegiate competitions to exhibit their talents and win medals and trophies.

Transportation

Pallavaram is connected by local electric train network and City Transport Corporation buses. University buses are available from the Pallavaram Railway Station to the campus and vice versa and also ply across Chennai City and suburbs.

Auditorium

"Shivalayaa" is an auditorium of 200 seating capacity built for curricular, cocurricular and cultural activities like seminars, conferences, intra and inter-universities cultural fests.[12]

There are separate hostels for men and women within the campus. A laundry facility is available to the students on a chargeable basis. A qualified Medical Attendant is available at the campus. Medical and hospital facilities are available at Pallavaram and the cost of the same would have to be met by the students. Mess and Canteen facility is available for the inmates.[12]

Library

VELS Library building spans 20 0 sq ft (0 m2). It has a seating capacity of 400 persons. The library houses a collection of 63,000 Books and 11,000 back volumes. It subscribes to around 340 periodicals (national and international), 8100 + E-Journals, 3400 E-Books, 1718 Dissertations, 3200 CDs, DVDs and audio–visual resources.

It has a separate library for Maritime Studies at Thalambur having built-up area of 3,000 sq ft (280 m2) and more than 5000 books.

Automation covers all library activities such as acquisition, circulation with provision for renewal, reservation, serial control, OPAC ( Online Public Access Catalogue), and generating reports and statistics.

Besides the Central Library, each School has its own library with technical books and journals.

Special features

Fully automated modern Library Information System with bar-coding of books, non-book materials and ID cards to enable laser scanning of issues and returns.

The library has been using LIBGENIE, an Integrated Library Management Software Package, with all modules of the library housekeeping operations. Using Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) users can search the library online catalogue by author, title and keywords. The users can know the latest editions of periodicals, books and the status of a document (whether on shelf or on issue).

Vels University's Library is an Associate member of the Madras Library Network (MALIBNET) which is the consortium of more than 50 libraries in the city like IIT, CLRI, MAT, Anna University, Madras University etc.

Archives Section

Library has a separate section for journal back volumes. Its electronic resources provide current as well as archival access to core and peer reviewed journals. Census reports, Government publications and publications of world bodies are made available.

Vels University's campaign in Jaffna

Vels University had a campaign of its programs in the Sri Lankan Tamil populated Jaffna on 5 and 6 March 2011.
