The 2004-05 NBA season was the Nets' 29th season in the NBA.[1]

The Nets made a roster move midseason, acquiring All-Star Vince Carter from Tornoto in a trade for Alonzo Mourning, Eric Williams, and Aaron Williams. Mourning never played for the Raptors and he was waived not long after the trade. He decided to return to the Miami Heat for his second stint.

The new "big three" of Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson, and new team captain Carter rarely played together as they missed significant time due to injuries. Despite a stellar season from Carter, the Nets finished with a disappointing 42-40 record, which earned them a playoff spot. In the first round, New Jersey faced the Miami Heat, led by Shaquille O'Neal and a young Dwyane Wade. They were eliminated from the playoffs by the Heat in four straight games.
