The seventh season of American animated television series Adventure Time, created by Pendleton Ward, began airing on Cartoon Network in the United States, following the series' sixth season. The series is based on a short produced for Frederator's Nicktoons Network animation incubator series Random! Cartoons. The season will follow the adventures of Finn, a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Along the way, they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, and Marceline the Vampire Queen.

The season was storyboarded and written by Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Jesse Moynihan, Adam Muto, Ako Castuera, Sam Alden, Kirsten Lepore, Andres Salaff, Hanna K. Nyström, Luke Pearson, Emily Partridge, Kris Mukai, Graham Falk, Kent Osborne, and KC Green. The seventh season of Adventure Time features a special miniseries entitled Stakes, which details Marceline's backstory, as well as Finn, Jake, Bubblegum, and Marceline's undertaking to defeat several newly resurrected vampires. Both Lepore and Alex & Lindsay Small-Butera were featured this season as guest animators, with the former directing the stop-motion episode "Bad Jubies", and the latter two working on "Beyond the Grotto".

The season premiered with the episode "Bonnie & Neddy", which was viewed by 1.07 million viewers. This marked a decrease in ratings from the previous season finale, "Hot Diggity Doom"/"The Comet". The season was produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Frederator Studios. In addition, several compilation DVDs that contain episodes from the season are scheduled for release.

Development

Concept

The series follows the adventures of Finn the Human, a human boy, and his best friend Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape, grow, and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Along the way, they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, and Marceline the Vampire Queen. Common storylines revolve around Finn and Jake discovering strange creatures, dealing with the antagonistic but misunderstood Ice King, and battling monsters in order to help others.[1] Main story arcs for this season include Bubblegum adjusting to life in exile and eventually reclaiming the Candy Kingdom crown,[2] and Marceline coming to terms with her vampiric nature.[3]

Production

This season features episode outlines penned by Ashly Burch.

On July 25, 2014, the series was renewed for a seventh season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.[4] In late September,Tom Herpich posted a picture on Tumblr of him and Steve Wolfhard pitching the season premiere to the Adventure Time crew, suggesting that storyboarding for the season had already commenced.[5] This season's episodes were produced in a process similar to previous seasons' episodes. First, all of the episodes began as simple two-to-three-page outline that contained the necessary plot information.[6] These outlines were then handed off to storyboard artists, who would then expand the rough outline into a full storyboard.[7] The episodes' design and coloring were done in Burbank, California. Animation was handled overseas in South Korea, either by Rough Draft Korea or by Saerom Animation.[8][9][10] By August 2015, production of the season had been completed and most of the staff's focus had shifted to the eighth season.[11]

The sixth season of the show had featured several episodes that Muto described as "heady", and at the 2015 New York Comic Con, he later noted that this season would strive to focus more on "simpler stories with the characters".[12] With that being said, he assured the crowd that it would not be a "throwback" to the style of the first few seasons of Adventure Time, which were noted for their utmost focus on comedy.[12]

Continuing a tradition first started with the fifth season episode "A Glitch is a Glitch", this season features the work of several guest animators. First, the episode "Bad Jubies" was directed by Kirsten Lepore and animated via stop motion.[13] Lepore had previously animated the short stop-motion tag for Frederator, the production company that produces many shows, including Adventure Time.[14] A sneak peek of Lepore's episode was first aired at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 19, 2015, several months before the official debut of the season.[15] Second, "Beyond the Grotto" features 7 minutes of animation courtesy of Alex & Lindsay Small-Butera, a husband and wife duo perhaps best known for their web series Baman Piderman.[16]

Artists who helped storyboard this season included Herpich, Wolfhard, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Jesse Moynihan, Muto, Ako Castuera, Sam Alden, Andres Salaff, Hanna K. Nyström, Luke Pearson, Emily Partridge, Kris Mukai, Graham Falk, Kent Osborne, and KC Green.[nb 1] Pearson—a British cartoonist who had previously storyboarded several episodes during the fifth season with Xayaphone—was temporarily hired to storyboard two episodes with Partridge.[17][18][19] Similarly, Castuera, who had left the series after storyboarding the fifth season finale "Billy's Bucket List", returned only as a temporary storyboarder; she worked on three episodes with Moynihan and one episode with Nyström.[20][21] Moynihan then worked with Alden for the remainder of the season before leaving the show in order to finish his web comic Forming.[22][23][24] Additionally, supervising director Andres Salaff left after this season to storyboard on the Cartoon Network series Uncle Grandpa.[25]

While series creator Pendleton Ward worked on a few outlines for this season,[26] Osborne told IndieWire that Ward did not take an active role in developing episode outlines that were produced after November 2014. With this being said, Osborne noted that Ward still looked over them and provided occasional input. Instead, Ward focused much of his attention on developing an Adventure Time movie.[27] In February 2015, Ashly Burch was hired to pen story outlines for the show. Burch had previously voiced several characters in a number of sixth season episodes.[28] Burch was hired after she befriended Osborne and was invited to audition for a role in the writers' room. After proving herself, she became a permanent member of the writing staff. She later joked that, because she was a fan of the show prior to being hired, writing for the show is akin to writing fan fiction.[29]

Miniseries

Former series storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar returned to write a song for the miniseries.

On February 18, 2015, during Cartoon Network's upfront announcing shows for their 2015–16 season, the network announced a special miniseries, which would air as part of season seven.[30][31][32] Cartoon Network was encouraged to greenlight the miniseries after the success of the 2014 event series Over the Garden Wall, which was created by Pat McHale, the former creative director of Adventure Time.[33] The eight-part miniseries, entitled Stakes,[34] follows Finn and Jake as they face a new threat brought about when one of Princess Bubblegum's science projects unleashes the ghosts of Marceline's past.[30] Former storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar also returned, both to write a new song for the miniseries entitled "Everything Stays", as well as to voice Marceline's mother.[34][35]

Cast

This season saw Andy Daly's the King of Ooo become a recurring character.

Returning voice actors may include voice acting veterans John DiMaggio (who portrays Jake the Dog), Tom Kenny (who plays The Ice King), and Hynden Walch (who voices Princess Bubblegum). In addition, Jeremy Shada portrays the voice of Finn the Human, and Olivia Olson portrays Marceline the Vampire Queen. Ward himself provides the voice for several minor characters, including Lumpy Space Princess. Former storyboard artist Niki Yang voices the sentient video game console BMO in English, as well as Jake's girlfriend Lady Rainicorn in Korean.[36] Polly Lou Livingston, a friend of Pendleton Ward's mother, Bettie Ward, plays the voice of the small elephant Tree Trunks.[37][38][39] Jessica DiCicco voices Flame Princess, Finn's ex-girlfriend and the sovereign of the Fire Kingdom.[40][41] Andy Milonakis voices N.E.P.T.R., a sentient robot who makes and throws pies.[42][43] Several episodes also feature The Lich, the series' principal antagonist. The Lich is portrayed by Ron Perlman in his demonic form.[44] The Adventure Time cast records their lines together in group recordings as opposed to different recording sessions with each voice actor. This is to record more natural sounding dialogue among the characters. Hynden Walch has described these group recordings as akin to "doing a play reading—a really, really out there play."[45]

In addition to the regular cast members, episodes feature guest voices from many ranges of professions, including actors, musicians, and artists. The premiere "Bonnie and Neddy" sees the return of Andy Daly as the King of Ooo and Paul Scheer as Toronto.[46] Daly had previously played this role in the fifth season episode "Apple Wedding" and the sixth season episodes "Gold Stars" and "Hot Diggity Doom".[47][48][49] Scheer had appeared in the latter two.[48][49] Daly would go on to be featured in other season seven episodes as well, like "Varmints", "Mama Said", "May I Come In?", "Take Her Back", and "The Dark Cloud".[50][51][52][53][54] "Bonnie & Neddy" also features series' supervising director Andres Salaff voicing Neddy.[46] Anne Heche returns to voice the eponymous character in "Cherry Cream Soda", and the episode also features series' storyline writer Jack Pendarvis reprising his role as Root Beer Guy.[55][56] Additionally, Pendarvis would appear in "Mama Said", an episode which also features the voice of storyboard artist Ako Castuera as Canyon.[51] The miniseries features Sugar as Marceline's mother, Ava Acres as a young Marceline, Rebecca Romijn as The Empress, Billy Brown as the Vampire King, Paul Williams as the Hierophant, Ron Funches as the Fool, Beau Billingslea as the Moon, and Kyle Kinane as Cloud Dance.[57][58][59] "The More You Moe, the Moe You Know" features Chuck McCann reprising his role as Moe, and the episode also guest stars Thu Tran as AMO.[60] Paget Brewster and Ron Lynch return in "Summer Showers" and voice Viola and Mr. Pig, respectively.[61] In "Angel Face", Kyla Rae Kowalewski reprises her role as Me-Mow.[62] Music parody artist "Weird Al" Yankovic returns for "President Porpoise is Missing", once again voicing Banana Man; the episode also features James Urbaniak as Vice President Blowfish.[63] Kevin Michael Richardson appears in "Bad Jubies", lending his voice to both an automated storm alert, as well as an aggressive storm.[64]

In 'King's Ransom", storyboard artist Tom Herpich once again plays the role of Mr. Fox.[65] Max Charles appears in "Scamps", playing Hugo the chocolate-dipped marshmallow.[66] "Crossover" features Kumail Nanjiani and James Kyson reprising their roles of Prismo and Big Destiny, respectively; Lou Ferrigno appears in the same episode, playing Bobby, an alternate universe variant of the hero Billy.[67] In "Flute Spell", Jenny Slate voices Huntress Wizard and Steve Agee voices Science Cat.[68] Tunde Adebimpe, the lead singer from the band TV on the Radio, appears in "The Thin Yellow Line", voicing Banana Guard 16.[69] Both Lena Dunham and Pamela Adlon reprise their characters Betty and Gunter the dinosaur, respectively, in "Broke His Crown".[70] In "Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension", Dan Mintz, Henry Rollins, and Laura Silverman return to reprise their roles as T.V., Bob, and Ethel, respectively. The episode also features former storyboard artist Bert Youn and comedian Fred Stoller voicing the rainicorns Lee and Roy.[71] The episode "I Am a Sword" guest stars Amy Sedaris, Agee, and Melinda Hill; Sedaris plays Bandit Princess, Agee plays a Merchant and Science Cat, and Hill plays Space Bear and Sharon the spiky person, respectively.[72] Storyline writer Ashly Burch plays Bun Bun in the titular episode, which also features Keith David reprising his role as the former Flame King.[73][74]

Various other characters are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, Maria Bamford, and Steve Little.[36]
