Bokaro Steel City ( pronunciation ) is a major industrial centre and the fourth largest city in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the headquarters of Bokaro district (one of the most industrialised zones in India) and home to the largest steel plant in India and several other large, medium and small industries. Current Integrated Steel Plant of Bokaro was supposed to be setup at Purulia City but due to past politics of West Bengal Government, plan was shifted. Several Companies like TATA had faced the same issue in past.

Bokaro Steel City is the headquarters of the Bokaro District as well as Koylanchal range (Bokaro, Dhanbad and Giridih). It is one of the three headquarters of the Police IG zone, apart from Ranchi and Dumka, covering seven districts — Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Giridih, Koderma, Chatra, Bokaro, and Ramgarh.^[1]

History

Formerly there was a village named Maraphari deep in the jungles of Chota Nagpur. The closest village cluster was Chas. Purulia was the closest town and the area was ruled by the Maharaja of Kashipur. Folklore has it that this area came under Mughal rule by the conquests of Veer Man Singh. The region was named ManBhoom after him.(VeerBhoom and SinghBhoom are the neighbouring regions are also named after him.)

This remote place came into prominence when Jawaharlal Nehru planned to build the first swadeshi steel plant with the help of the Soviets. The proximity to coal, iron ore, manganese, and other raw materials had helped in the selection of this place. The steel plant was incorporated as a limited company on 24 January 1964. It was later merged with SAIL and came to be known as Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL). The late 1960s and early 1970s saw heavy construction of the steel plant as well as the township. The first blast furnace started on 2 October 1972.

The Sector III and Camps I and II were the first to come in the township followed by sectors II, IX, IV and so on. The first private school was St. Xavier's School which the Jesuits from Hazaribagh built on invitation from the BSL management. In the 1980s the township developed rapidly with new sectors, schools, parks, zoos and other public amenities. Township development ceased with the completion of IV/F and IV/G. In all, Bokaro Steel City consists of 10 sectors (Sector I to XII where sectors VII and X do not exist). Each sector is then further divided into sub-sectors A, B, C and so on.

The late 1990s saw sprucing up of the City Park and creation of islands, new schools and the success of Bokaro's students in all-India level competition exams, especially IITs. During this period Bokaro also emerged as the eastern hub for academics. Bokaro has a cosmopolitan culture as the population consists of people from all parts of India.

Geography

Bokaro is in the eastern part of India at 23°17′N 86°05′E / 23.29°N 86.09°E^[2]

It is in picturesque surroundings on the southern bank of river Damodar with Garga, one of its tributaries meandering along the southern and eastern outskirts of the city. On the north, the city is flanked by the high ranges of the Parasnath Hills and on the south, just beyond the river Garga, it is enveloped by the Satanpur hillocks.

Two cooling ponds have been built for use in steel making. A dam on river Garga was built to supply water to the township as well as the steel plant, but due to ever increasing demand Tenughat dam is supplementing it.

Demographics

As of the 2011 India census, under the urban agglomeration of Bokaro Steel City, it is the 86th largest urban agglomeration and fourth largest city in Jharkhand.^[3]

As per 2011 Census of India, Bokaro Steel City Urban Agglomeration had a population of 564,319, of which males were 299,232 and females 264,185.^[4] Bokaro Steel City Urban Agglomeration is composed of Bokaro Steel City (Census Town), Chas (Nagar Parishad) and Bandhgora (CT).^[5]

As per the 2011 Census of India Bokaro Steel City (Census Town) had a population of 414,820, of which 219,646 were males and 195,174 females. Scheduled Castes numbered 44,861 and Scheduled Tribes numbered 41,272.^[6]

In 2001, Bokaro Steel City (CT) had a population of 394,173 of which males were 213,044 and females 181,829. Males constituted 53% of the population and females 47%. Total number of literates in Bokaro Steel City were 289,296, with males numbering 173,639 and females 115,657.^[7]

Literacy

As per 2011 census the total number of literates in Bokaro Steel City UA was 420,736 (84.87% of total population) out of which 242,827 (92.27% of males) were males and 177,909 (76.50% of females) were females.^[4]

As per 2011 census the number of literates in Bokaro Steel City (CT) was 303,783 out of which 174,522 were males and 129,261 were females.^[6]

Economy

The city gets its name from the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) which lies at the core of its economy. It's well aided by the new steel mill Electrosteel Castings Limited and power plants like Bokaro Power Supply Corporation Private Limited, a joint venture of Damodar Valley Corporation and BSL.

Being an industrial area, agriculture has taken a backseat — except small amounts of paddy grown on the fringes of the city by the villagers.

Steel Authority India Limited

The economy of the Steel City is heavily depended on the steel plant which is the primary source of income for the employees. After the 2001 downturn, steel prices hardened due to a huge rise in consumption by China and India. This resulted in large profits by SAIL which crossed a record Rs 60 billion (USD 1.3 Bn)^[8] by the end of FY06. It has maintained its profitability since then with a slight dip to Rs 49 billion (USD 1 Bn)^[9] in 2011 due to unfavorable economic conditions of 2011.

Electrosteel Castings Limited

A Kolkata-based water pipe manufacturer acquired 2,500 acres (10 km²) of land 18 km from the city and has erected its 2.2 MTPA steel plant. The company has invested close to Rs 80 Bn (USD 1.6 Bn) on this project which was operational from 2010.^[10][11] It is near Asanbani village under Sabra Panchayat.

Bokaro Power Supply Co Pvt. Ltd.

Bokaro Power Supply Co Pvt. Ltd. (BPSCL) came into being on 18 September 2001 under Companies Act 1956 as a part of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Business Reconstruction and Restructuring Plan and with intent to strengthen its core business activity (i.e., steel manufacturing). SAIL has assigned its entire business as a going concern pertaining to the capacity of steam generation 660 T/hr. of BSL by the deed of transfer and assignment of business. BPSCL becomes a joint venture of SAIL and Domodar Valley Corporation (DVC) on acquisition of shares by DVC. DVC and SAIL agreed to participate in the equity share of BPSCL in 50:50 ratio.

ONGC, Bokaro Steel City

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation

Since 2007, ONGC has been working on its coal bed methane project to exploit the abundant reserves in the Damodar Basin (Jharkhand and West Bengal). The corporate office of the Bokaro and Jharia blocks of this project is in Bokaro Steel City near Naya More. Though the project is under development and is yet to start its production, it is soon going to do so as the company has gone into a Joint Venture along with an Australian giant. The major sites in Jharia block lies in Parbatpur near Electrosteel Castings Limited (around 24 km from City Centre) whereas in Bokaro block it lies in the Gomia region.

BoJCL

Bokaro Jaypee Cement Limited

Bokaro Jaypee Cement Limited Dalmia cement (BOJCL), the second joint venture between the Jaypee group and SAIL with management control vested in the company, is incorporated to set up a 2.1 MTPA capacity cement plant at Bokaro Steel City.^[12] At present it is Dalmia Cement. A bus is used to carry personnel from city area to Plant with Dalmia logo on it. The bus can be spotted in Sector 4F near Surya Mandir when not in use.

BIADA

The primary economy is supplemented by BIADA governing four districts — Bokaro, Dhanbad, Giridih and Koderma — in the Balidih area of Bokaro beside NH-23. It has a wide manufacturing environment with more than 170 square km and constitutes more than 500 S.S.I and large manufacturing enterprises. It manufactures industrial components for small and medium scale industries.

Upcoming projects

• Bokaro Steel Plant Modernisation^[13] extend its capacity from 4.5 MT to 7.5 MT before 2011. In the same way, further plan for SAIL to extend BSL capacity to 17 MT before 2020. Apart from this a SAIL greenfield steel plant is planned to set up before 2015, capacity of 5 MT. So before 2020 BSL total capacity goes up to 22 MT, approximately double the present capacity (13 MT) of SAIL all steel plants.
• ArcelorMittal^[14][15] is looking to set up a 12 million tonne greenfield plant in Bokaro. The company is now looking for 8,000 acres (32 km²) of land but primarily take 2,500-acre (10 km²) of land at Petarwar/Kasmar (in Bokaro district) just 20 km from the city, nearby on NH-23. The company has been allocated 32–35 million cubic meter of water to be drawn from the Tenughat dam. In another move ArcelorMittal are to use the spare land of SAIL by establishing a new steel plant of 3–4 ml/ton capacity of 50:50 JV with PSU in BSL premises itself by the investment of $2.7 billion.
• Tata Steel^[16] wants to set up a steel plant with a capacity of 2–3 million tonnes at an investment of up to Rs. 140 billion in Bokaro along with SAIL. The jointly owned plant is proposed to come up on a 1,000-acre (4.0 km²) plot of land that belongs to SAIL.
• SAIL-POSCO JV Steel Plant: Steel minister Sri Virbhadra Singh has announced another new steel plant for Bokaro as part of a joint venture with Posco and SAIL by using FINEX technologies for high quality steel. The capacity of the plant will be 1.5 mt, establish in BSP periphery of 500 acres (2.0 km²).^[17]
• Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd,^[18][19][20] which signed an MoU on 5 February 2003, has identified 1,300 acres (5.3 km²) for its project. Monnet Ispat will invest over Rs 140 billion for the project and is building a 280-mW power plant.
• DVC and SAIL^[21] have a joint venture of 50:50 to extend the capacity of Bokaro power plant from 500 MW to 1000 MW.
• SEZ : Jharkhand government's second SEZ after Jamshedpur is planned to set up in BIADA in 500 acres (2.0 km²) land .
• Software Technology Park:^[22] Buoyed by the success of the software technology park (STPI) in the state capital, the government is planning to set up two more STPIs — in Jamshedpur and Bokaro. The Bokaro Industrial Area Development Authority (Biada) to make land available for the projects. It has suggested availability of land in the Balidih industrial area, where the ancillary units of Bokaro steel plant are housed.

The primary economy is supported by the services sector. The city market at the center of the city in Sector 4 has shops selling computer hardware and has computer training institutes, making Bokaro a hub of computer studies for the region. The old Chas bazaar remains a cheap wholesale market, and dundi baag is one of the biggest vegetable markets in the region. Besides these, each sector has its own small shopping center catering to the day-to-day needs of the people.

Malls and multiplexes

The Bokaro administration has taken a step to turn Bokaro into a shopping hub for the region. An anti-encroachment drive has been launched in the steel city to make way for malls and multiplexes. The BSL administration has prepared a blueprint to develop shopping destinations and multiple-screen theatres.

• The Bokaro Mall – With a cost of ₹60 Crore, The Bokaro Mall-cum-multiplex is operational in the heart of the city. The new mall is established in the 2 acres (0.81 ha) of land with three screens of PVR Cinemas, Big Bazaar, Reliance Retail, Pizza Hut restaurants, food court, club with facilities of sauna bath and steam bath, gym, entertainment zone, gaming zone and swimming pool. Agrawal & Agrawal, one of the best professional architectural firms in Eastern India, has designed the mall, developed by Amit Realty Pvt. Ltd. and managed by Preeminent Management & Consultancy Pvt. Ltd.
• Eylex Multiplex – Devi Cinema is being converted, located in a prime commercial area. Three screen multiplex 750 seats
• Glitz Cinema – Glitz Cinema is planning to open its second multiplex of Jharkhand in Bokaro by 2015. Currently, in Jharkhand, Glitz Cinema is only in Ranchi.^[23]
• AV Quetzal Mall – 5 storied, 30000sqf floored area mall coming up in city by 2016.^[24]

• Bokaro Steel Plant – Bokaro Steel Plant(23°40′16″N 86°06′16″E / 23.671136°N 86.104531°E)^[25] is one of the oldest steel mills in the country, with an output capacity of more than five million tonnes of steel. Based on area, Bokaro Steel Plant was once considered to be the largest steel plant of Asia. The plant also has a power plant, now being run by Bokaro power Supply Company Ltd., a 50–50 joint venture between SAIL and DVC. The plant is undergoing a modernisation program, and the increased demand for steel over the last couple of years saw all the blast furnaces in the company becoming operational together for the first time. The company has about 30000 employees on its rolls as of 2005. BSL is well known for its flat products and in the recent times it has become the major producer of flat products in India.
• Garga Dam is around 12 km from the city centre, near the railway station on the NH-23. It is a picnic spot for the citizens of Bokaro. The green surroundings and variety of aquatic habitat residing in and around Garga Dam lures school excursions and biological expeditions to the area The dam is constructed for the use of the steel plants as well as for a water supply for the people.
• Parasnath Hills – Parasnath Hills are a range of hills in Giridih district of Jharkhand. The highest peak is 1350 metres. In Jainism, the Parasnath hills are referred to as Shri Sammet Shikhar Teerth (Shikharji). They are one of the two most prominent Jain pilgrimage centres, the other being Shetrunjaya, in Gujarat state of Western India. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Twenty of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation on this hill. According to some, nine Tirthakaras attained salvation on this hill.
• Rajrappa is a tourist place and is famous for the 'Chinnamasta Temple' which is situated on the bank of the confluence of the rivers Bhairavi and Damodar. The temple is nestled amidst dense greenery eight kilometres from the Colony. The place gets its name from the temple which is known as 'Rajrappa Mandir'. Rajrappa is 60 km from the Bokaro Steel City.
• Bokaro Ispat Pustakalaya, near Bokaro Hotel, has a collection of over 40,000 books (including some valuable manuscripts) that meets the reading requirements of the people in the township. It is managed by the management of the steel plant.
• City Centre, Bokaro is the main shopping district. The difference between the market and most other major markets in Indian cities is in the ample parking space, and the wide approach and market roads. The centre has all major Indian banks, shops for clothing, electronics, and food joints. There are two cinemas – Jeetendra and Pali Plaza. The latest comers to the market are coaching institutes, small clinics, and hospitals.
• Jagannath Temple, located in Sector IV, is a newly built temple. The temple is a replica of the famous temple in Puri, Orissa. The King of Puri inaugurated the temple. The rath yatra is celebrated very beautifully in the Jangannath Temple by the Oriya community residing in Bokaro.
• Aaiyappa Mandir is in Sector V near Bokaro Club. It holds a significant importance in the cultural and religious domain of the people from Southern India (especially Kerala) residing in Bokaro.
• Buddha Vihar is in Sector IV/D, next to Jagannath Temple. This is the only place in Bokaro for the Buddhist religious gatherings and discussions.
• Gayatri Mandir is in Sector IX/A. The Navmi Puja at Gayatri mandir is quite famous and the Khichdi which is distributed as the prasad on the occasion of Navmi Puja is well known for its taste, inviting people from all the corners of the city.
• Ram Mandir, in Sector I/C, is the most famous and oldest temple in Bokaro Steel City. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Rama, though there are several other smaller mandirs encircling the main one, which are dedicated to other gods and goddesses. The most prominent ones among them are that of Lord Shiva, Maa Durga and Bajrang Bali. The temple has gone a major modification and renovation in the past couple of years. The Ram Mandir market which is known to be the oldest market of Bokaro has really grown a lot in the recent few years. It is quite famous for its snacks which ranges from South Indian items at coffee house to stalls of batata poori, chat, samosa and rolls.
• Kali Bari, located in Sector VIII, is one of the oldest temples of the city. As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Shakti, Goddess Kali. The temple is based on Bengali architecture and is well known for its traditional Bengali rituals and traditions. The Durga Puja celebrations at Kali Bari is quite famous and attracts a lot of devotees. Besides the religious activities it is a major socialising place for the Bengalis of the city. The temple organises an annual painting and music competition which is attended by hundreds of students from the schools of the city.
• Sai Baba Sansthan is in Sector VI near the TV tower. Daily aartis at morning 5.30 Kakar Aarti, 6.30 Abhishek Aarti, 12.00 Noon Dhoop Aarti, at evening 6.00 p.m. Sandhya Aarti and 9.00 pm Shez Aarti are performed. A special aarti is performed every Thursday 8.00 p.m.
• City Park – Bokaro has a City Park with an artificial lake and three artificial islands. These islands were designed in Japanese style. The park used to have some animals but they were transferred to the Jawaharlal Botanical Garden in the early 1990s. There is a small guest house that is used to host parties for visiting dignitaries. The park hosts an annual Basant Mela (Spring Fiesta) in early February.
• Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park is the biggest zoological garden in Jharkhand, was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It has animals and birds from around the world, with the big cats being the biggest attractions. The zoo came into limelight after multiple breedings of white tigers, royal Bengal tigers, and the Asiatic lion. The cubs were sent to zoos in India and abroad, since the available resources were not good enough to cater to the needs of so many big cats. Boating is allowed in the artificial lake created within the park. There is a kids corner near the bear cage and adjacent to it is a small dam.
• Chas – Just across the Garga river on NH 23 is the twin-town Chas. It was once a small grain trading hub of the region, which first became famous during the Second World War when the British government used it as a base to supply soldiers fighting on the eastern front against the Japanese. After the decision of government of India to establish the Bokaro Steel Plant it gained in stature. It was the administrative headquarters of the area when Bokaro was a part of Dhanbad district, and later when Bokaro became a district. The headquarters got moved to the steel township once Bokaro was carved out as a separate district. Chas is presently known for its wholesale market of grocery and electronics items. Most of the people get their shopping done from Chas instead of going to the more up-market City Centre. Though there has been a definite decline in this trend.
• Chira Chas – Chira Chas is a suburb of Bokaro and Chas on the eastern fringe of the city, beyond the Garga river. Chira Chas is notable for the real estate boom and many housing projects and integrated townships, coming up within its scenic environs.Chira Chas is home to famous Sri Sri Kalika Maharani Temple & Various Township project of Vastu Vihar.
• Pupunki Ashram is the last Kasba on the Bokaro Dhanbad route. The village, with its fields and fishery ponds, is squeezed between NH-32, the Bokaro-Chandrapura railway line and the Damodar river. Opposite to the village across the NH-32 is the pious Pupunki Ashram "The Multiversity". Established by Akhanda Mandaleshwer Sri Sri Swami Swarupananda Paramhansha Deva, popularly known as Babamani. This Ashram was a home for Gurus who used to harbour Gaushalas with hundreds of students being imparted scientific and spiritual knowledge. The place is a popular picnic spot.

Education

Besides the steel plant, Bokaro is known for what its students have achieved over the years. Today students from all over the state and elsewhere come to the city to make a difference to their professional lives. The city has provided myriads IITians, doctors, and civil servants (IAS, IPS, IFS officers) to the country. Many IIT top rankers came from the city.

The city has a plethora of excellent schools affiliated to the ICSE or CBSE boards providing education till under graduate level. Some of these schools are Delhi Public School, Bokaro, The Pentecostal Assembly School, Bokaro, Holy Cross School, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, St. Xavier's School, Bokaro Public School, GGPS, Bokaro, Sardar Patel Public School and Mar Gregorios Memorial Higher Secondary School. There are English medium public school run by trusts and missions. They are supplemented by central government administered Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bokaro Steel Limited administered Bokaro Ispat Vidyalayas, Adarsh Vidya Mandir and Jharkhand state administered schools too.

In the years after the 1990s, it saw Bokaroites getting top ranks in IIT JEE,AFMC,CBSE Medical, AIIMS, IAS and other major entrance examinations of India. Success story is still continuing in India and abroad. The city has a very large expatriate population in Africa US, UAE, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Most of these people graduated from schools in the city in the eighties and nineties, before moving to some other city, and finally out of the country.

Although education till under-graduate level is one of the best in India, graduate and post-graduate level education provided by the government colleges are of shoddy quality.

Mohan Kumar Mangalam Stadium

• Mohan Kumar Mangalam Stadium stadium is in the heart of the city, in sector 4.^[26]
• The SAIL Football Academy nourishes football from school level and provides free education to students who perform well in football. Bokaro school teams participate every year in Subroto Cup and have emerged as winners on many occasions.
• The Senapati Cricket Stadium is behind the Mohankumar Mangalam Stadium, in front of the Bokaro Library. It has hosted some Ranji Cup and state level matches. The base camp for the National Women Cricket team was organised at the stadium. It is managed by BSL.
• The Railway Stadium is situated near Bokaro station in the Balidih area. It is managed by Indian Railways and hosts athletics and football. Accommodation facilities for the players is provided at a nearby hostel.
• The Trainees Hostel Ground accommodates local and guest players. The lodging facility is provided by Trainees hostel No.1 and No.2. Hostel 1 provides a facility for sporting events such as weightlifting, and basketball.
• The Bokaro Club and Sports Complex is in Sec. 5 and Sec. 4 respectively, with facilities for indoor sports like table tennis, badminton, chess, billiards as well as for sports such as swimming and tennis. Coaches are available for volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, kabaddi and khokho.

Culture

Bokaro Sangeet Kala Academy in Sector 4 (beside YMCA) offers learning opportunities in fine art, especially classical music. The students get opportunities to showcase their talent and training.

Kala Kendra in Sector 2 is a center for Arts and Culture.

Festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, Holi, Eid and Chhath Puja are celebrated across the township.

Kali Bari the temple for Goddess Kali, promotes arts and provides training in classical dances like Kathak.

Health services

Bokaro General Hospital

The township has a 910-bed Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) with specialised units like Critical Care Unit, Intensive Coronary Care Unit, Haemodialysis Unit, Nuclear Medicine Laboratory, etc. The Child Care Unit of BGH has been recognised as a Baby Friendly Hospital by UNICEF. The Blood Bank of BGH has been given the status of Regional Training Centre by Government of India. It is the only blood bank in the state of Jharkhand, which gives training to blood bank officers and technicians in Jharkhand.

To take care of the employees working in the plant, an Occupational Health Services Centre has been provided within the plant premises. Bokaro General Hospital is recognised by the Indian Medical Council for imparting training to housemen and interns and also by the Nursing Council of India for training of Student Nurses. Bokaro General Hospital has the distinction of being the only one in Jharkhand being recognised by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi as a centre for imparting post-graduate training to candidates appearing for the Diplomat of National Board examinations. The medical team has around 200 skilled doctors and over 1000 paramedic staff.

Bokaro steel city is connected with important parts of the country like Kolkata, Durg, Coimbatore, New Delhi, Chennai, Jabalpur, Surat, Hyderabad, Alappuzha, Bilaspur, Mumbai, Nagpur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Amritsar, Raipur, Gorakhpur, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi etc. by rail. Bokaro Steel City is the main station 12 km from the city centre. It is under the administration of the Adra division of South Eastern Railway zone, of Indian Railways. All mail/express trains including Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Garib Rath and Jan Shatabdi Express stop here. Other stations in the city limits are Radhagaon, Tupkadih, Chas, Ispatnagar, Chandrapura

Road

Bokaro lies on the junction of NH-32 and NH-23. NH-32 passes through Chas whereas NH-23 passes through the main city.

Naya More is the main bus terminal. The bus stand is divided into platforms for private buses. A Government Bus Terminal is just adjacent to the main bus terminal. Besides Naya More there are two more bus terminals, Basanti More in Sector-9 and Dharamshala more in Chas. Regular Volvo bus services from the city centre and Naya More are available.

Private cars and taxi facilities are available everywhere in the city. Other transport is trekkers, autos, rickshaws and mini buses. The city boasts of one of the most well maintained roads in the whole state as maintenance is under the authority of the Steel Plant.

Air

Bokaro Airport is used only by private aircraft of SAIL and visiting dignitaries. Bokaro Steel Limited has expressed its readiness to allow the use of its airport for the purpose.

New Airport

Bokaro will soon figure on the country's air map as the Airports Authority of India(AAI) will set up a new airport there. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by AAI and the Jharkhand government for establishing airport in Bokaro in the presence of AAI chairman and Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda.

The new airport would have the capacity to allow commercial airliners such as Airbus A320 to land and take off which was not possible from the present airport.^[27]

Hotel Hans Regency

There are a number of hotels in Bokaro since it is an important industrial belt in India. Bokaro hotels offer very good service to guests. They have state-of-the-art facilities to make the guests comfortable and enable them to enjoy their trip. Bokaro Hotel provides hospitality service to all SAIL officials and other distinguished guest to the city. The state government own and operates circuit houses and guest houses in the city. The hotel facilities are of excellent quality and the staff of the hotel excels in their hospitality.
