Charlie Cameron (footballer, born 1994)
Charlie Cameron (born 5 July 1994) is a professional Australian rules football player who plays for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Cameron was taken with pick #7 in the 2013 Rookie Draft.[1]
Early life
Cameron was born in Mount Isa, Queensland[2] and raised in Mornington Island, Queensland.[3] Upon completing primary school, he began boarding at Marist College Ashgrove in Brisbane on an AIEF scholarship and played baseball at the state level for Queensland. He later switched to the more popular rugby union at his high school in the elite schoolboys competition. In his last year of schooling he was introduced to Australian rules football for the first time at the age of 16; he would later reflect that he "didn't really like it".[4] At the end of 2011 he moved with his family to Newman, Western Australia and was talked into playing for the local football team the Newman Saints.
Pre-AFL career
Cameron began playing club football for the first time for the Newman Saints in 2012 and impressed. Towards the end of the season he was invited to play for the Swan Districts Football Club and played three colts games. Entering his first pre-season ever, he impressed the coaches so much that he earned a spot in the senior team for the first round of the 2013 WAFL season.[5] After solidifying his place in the Swan Districts senior team, Cameron represented Western Australia at the 2013 AFL Under 18 Championships.
AFL career
In his first season at Adelaide, Cameron debuted in Round 9, 2014 against Collingwood.[6] Despite battling a groin injury, Cameron played seven games in his first AFL season and kicked nine goals, including a bag of three against Fremantle in round 12.[7]
In round 13, 2015, Cameron was nominated for the 2015 AFL Rising Star award for his performance against the Brisbane Lions, in which he kicked a goal and had three goal assists, five tackles and seven inside 50s.[4]
Statistics
- Statistics are correct to end of round 3, 2015.[8]
Personal
Cameron is well known throughout the league for his flamboyant celebrations after kicking a goal. His signature celebration is to put out his right hand and cup it, then with his left hand stir it. This unique celebration has thus been donned the name "Stirring the Pot". However, it is speculated that Cameron has copied this move from NBA player James Harden.
