Initially the tournament was simply named Brazilian Swimming Trophy. The meet is mostly held in a long course (50 m) pool.

The trophy has hegemony of teams from the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais. The first champion was Paulistano Club. The most successful teams are Pinheiros and Flamengo, having 14 and 13 titles, respectively. The current champion is Pinheiros.[3][4]

In 2016, the Trophy is an Swimming Test Event to 2016 Olympics and is being held at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro.[5]
