The Heartbeat Tour[4] is a concert tour by singer-songwriter Jessie J in support of her album, Who You Are. The tour visited Europe, South America, Oceania and Asia.

Background

There's definitely ideas floating around my mind and I've already written stuff down,' she revealed. 'But there won't be a trapeze with

80 dancers and me being lowered from the ceiling. I'm looking to push a few boundaries[5]

Jessie J performing during the tour.

The tour was announced on 1 June 2011 on London Radio Station, Capital FM.[6] General sale tickets for The Heartbeat Tour were released on 3 June 2011. She originally announced 11 UK dates; however, due to high demand, Jessie J added an extra London and Birmingham Date to the tour. She announced the extra dates on Twitter, saying "I just added a second London Hammersmith Apollo and Birmingham Academy date due to demand.#boyyyya".

The international leg of the tour was announced in September 2011, and was due to begin late February in Auckland, New Zealand.[7] However the show was cancelled a few days prior.[8] Therefore, it began in Brisbane, Australia on Thursday 1 March.[9] During a TV talk show appearance in support of the Australian dates, she agreed to be sawed in half by local magician Sam Powers in his "Thin Model" sawing illusion. After Australia, the tour visited Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore[10] and returned to the UK for several major UK Festivals; the Isle of Wight Festival and the Wireless Festival.[11][12] She also made an appearance at the 2012 Teenage Cancer Trust concert.[13]

Reception

Neil McCormick from The Telegraph, gave the tour a 3/5 star review, saying, "The only thing louder than her tonight is her audience, packed with mothers and daughters who seem to find something empowering in Jessie J's aggressively stomping approach to feminism, kicking cymbals with her black bovver boots and grabbing her crotch to deliver Do It Like a Dude, replete with uncensored Oedipal insults and bold declarations of equal-opportunity sexism. Her other principal message to her admirers is that hoariest of pop empowerment clichés 'be yourself', which she expounds upon at some length in formulaic power ballad Who You Are. Her rather pedestrian band crash in behind her as she works herself into a spiritual frenzy ('Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing!')."[14] Ian Gittens from The Independent also gave the tour 3/5 stars, saying, "Jessie J comes into her own live. Strapped into a skimpy purple bondage costume like a Primark Cleopatra, she turns in an exuberant, personality-plus performance that succeeds in temporarily distracting you from the awfulness of her material."[15] Loretta D'Urso from The Music Network said, "The set's simplicity and Jessie J's upheld vigor were admired features of the show. Not fancy in the slightest, the singer encompasses the knowledge that her powerful and kinky voice is enough to snare an audience and keep them pinned for as long as she wants."[16]

Opening acts

"This tour I wanted to have someone tour with me who I respect, who is super talented, I love listening to and who is an amazing performer.... @DevlinOfficial welcome to the #heartbeattour #essexking :)"
— Jessie J via Twitter.[17]

The Alive Tour was Jessie J's first arena tour. The tour consisted of 19 arena dates.[54]

Background

In May 2012 Jessie announced via Twitter that she would be setting off on a UK tour in late February 2013 and would finish in late March of the same year. Due to recording her second album and shooting The Voice UK.[55] the tour was postponed until early October 2013 and to end in early November. Jessie stated on her official Twitter page: "I would like to be the first to tell that you that my nice to meet you tour has been rescheduled to later next year. I am honestly truly sorry but I hope you all can understand that its just because I would like to take more time to finish my new album. I promise to make the show my biggest and best ever and cannot wait for you all to hear my new songs."[56] Tickets were transferable for the rescheduled dates and extra tour dates were added due to high demand. The tour was originally named 'Nice To Meet You' however due to the release of her second album Alive the tour was renamed 'Alive'.[57] On 12 October 2013 Jessie did a dress rehearsal for a few lucky fans who has the privilege to watch. The stage setting included 5 LED screens, a large door at the back of the stage, a rising platform, platforms for her band, a large catwalk; which encircles the stage - separating the very important heartbeats for the main audience. It was announced on 14 October that Lawson would be supporting Jessie at all dates except Birmingham, Sheffield and Aberdeen which would be supported by Neon Jungle.[58]

"Its called 'Nice to meet you tour' and it will be NICE! :) Can't wait to show you this tour I've been working on for months! BOOOOM!"
— Jessie J via Twitter.[59]

Critical response

The Alive tour was met with mixed reviews: some stating the show was a "powerhouse", others claiming the "video interludes took away from what could have been an amazing show." Writing for The Daily Telegraph, Alice Vincent gave the show three stars, feeling that "Jessie belted out songs like a force of nature", and opined that it was "these deliciously retro moments which worked best in J’s show. She gave us a fun, breezy rendition of Daydreamin’." Vincent went on to summarize, "Alive was a show to please all ages, and for that it should be commended."[60] The Belfast Telegraph gave the show four stars stating: "Always keen to provide a positive role model, there were lots of mini motivational speeches and words of encouragement and no evidence of any sleazy Miley Cyrus-type antics." The Belfast Telegraph finally stated that Jessie was "A class act – who was more than worth the wait." Sam Rigby at Digital Spy gave the show four stars and said "The sentimental messages of 'love who you are' and 'live life to the full' may have been overused during the 90-minute show but it is only a small complaint in what was a momentous night in Jessie J's career. Despite the focus on Jessie's voice, it didn't come at the expense of a visually pleasing production."[61]

Over the summer of 2014, Jessie J performed several festivals and concerts across the globe to promote her upcoming studio album. She then crossed the globe over fall 2014 on chat shows etc as the album was coming to a release. And when it did on October 14 this tour exploded with a wild range of arena shows including an appearance at the Jingle Bell Ball and performing at over 10 dates of the Jinle Ball Tour. The Sweet Talker UK tour began in Rhyl, Wales on 20 January 2015 set to cross the UK with 7 dates but due to popular demand an extra date was added in London and due to a through throat problem on the first night in Rhyl the Glasgow date was moved to the end of the leg on 1 February. Jessie J then attended the Grammy Awards with a few gigs in America before the Oceanic / Asian leg of the tour. Unfortunately she had to cancel her shows in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne due to a health problem. She then went onto to her huge North American leg through April and May before covering Europe with her sound on a European tour leading toad range of Summer Festivals around the globe and through until September before a couple of months well earned break for two months until December packed with Asian and North American dates concluding the year in Times Square on New Years Eve. Jessie J ferformed Greece is the Word in Greece Live to kick off her memories for 2016 and then added a couple of extra European dates in February after over 10 running shows in Zurich, Switzerland at Art on Ice. She finished the Sweet Talker World Tour in America in early April with 2 dates in Orlando, 1 date in Miami and Jessie J completed her longest tour to date with almost 200 dates on 15 April 2016 in Orlando, USA.
