UP Circuit is an active, academic, non-profit and non-political student organization based in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI), duly recognized by the University of the Philippines Diliman.[1] Established in 1994, the organization aims to promote academic excellence in the field of Electrical, Computer, and Electronics and Communications Engineering, and encourage holistic development of its members through various activities within and outside the university.

For the past 21 years, the organization has held 17 seasons of SquEEEze – the only annual Electrical and Electronics Engineering national quiz show,[2] and launched activities such as Sibol,[3] AKBAY,[4] and PalEEEtan.[5] In addition, it has also put together two seasons of ChargEEEng UP, co-presented four years of LoveRage in the UP Fair, co-presented Microsoft’s InstallFest,[6] handled numerous tutorials, review sessions and participated in volunteer works within the institute, the college and the community such as Y4iT,[7] EEEscape the ShoCKT and many other projects inside and outside EEEI.

History

In 1994, the UP College of Engineering first introduced degrees in BS ECE and BS CoE.[8] In response to this change, 18 students saw the needs of a bigger and more dynamic department leading to the founding of UP Circuit.[9]

Mission

Logo

The logo of the UP Circuit has the letters U, P, and C, which stand for UP Circuit. It also contains the acronyms of the three courses that comprise the EEE program on the magnetic field lines in a representation of a three-phase motor.

Activities

Breakthrough: The EEE Revolution

The event that bridges the gap between great minds & ideas to become the backbone of innovation.[10]

Potential-Innovation Camp
A project that spurs innovation, identify opportunities to apply engineering skills, and be able to present your idea to potential investors
Conquest-Hackathon
A project design contest wherein the participants will be given the chance to showcase their hands-on skills in designing and implementing creative solutions to problems - from the small everyday concerns, to the large electrical systems.
Movement-SquEEEze
Annual national intercollegiate EEE quiz show; started in 1998.[2]
In the past 17 years, SquEEEze continues to search for the best students of the participating colleges and universities in a quiz show that tests their knowledge in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) topics such as Circuit Analysis, Electromagnetics, Electronics, Digital Design, Computers, Communications, Power Systems, and Electric Machines.
SquEEEze is divided into three parts, the Elimination round - a written examination, the Sudden Death round - a face to face, one on one bout, and the Final Round - a accumulation of points from questions ranging from Easy to Hard Difficulties.
SquEEEze is not only a simple competition for it also serves as a starting point to EEE engineers by giving mini job fairs and company talks. For sure, company eyes will be seeking for the winner.
SquEEEze also has an online "taste test" that gives you a snippet of what to expect in the main event.[11]

The E-Waste Project

The E-Waste Project

The E-Waste Project is a trash collection drive of old, defective and obsolete electronic devices which aims to campaign the awareness on the impending threat that the growing number of old and defective electronic devices that are improperly disposed pose on the environment and encourage the practice of recycling and proper disposal of these hazardous and poisonous materials collectively known as "E-Waste." The proceeds of which would be used to fund AKBAY.[12]

PalEEEtan

Campus exchange program where the organization visits other universities offering EEE courses (Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Mapúa Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas)[5] An effective communication results to a good partnership. These partnerships will then create a culture of collaboration and innovations which may help improve teaching, learning, and research. In line with this, U.P Circuit established a program that will create a communication network between Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) students of different organizations from different academic institutions. In PalEEEtan, we create a common ground between Ateneo De Manila University's Ateneo ECE Society, De La Salle University's ECE Society, Far Eastern University's ECE Students Society, Mapua Institute of Technology's Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas' Network of ECE Students and our organization, U.P. Circuit.

AKBAY (Advanced Knowledge for the Betterment of Aspiring Youth)

Socio-civic project aimed at providing technological knowledge to high school students;[4] conceptualized by Lew Tria. AKBAY, which stands for Advanced Knowledge for the Betterment of the Aspiring Youth, is a socio-civic project initiated by UP Circuit aimed at providing high school students with technological knowledge in order to further aid them in their respective schoolings and better prepare them for their futures. It is a continuation of the project with the Ayala Foundation for the computerization of local public schools. Through AKBAY, UP Circuit envisions every high school student to be equipped with sufficient computer and information technology know-hows when they enter college or employment. We believe that with the advancing technology today, proper equipment is a necessity so that even local public schools can be at par with other schools. In this project, we plan to donate computer units, upgrade their existing PCs, and teach faculty and selected students proper maintenance and network troubleshooting of their computer facility.

InteraCKT

UP tour and bonding activity for EEE freshmen [13]

Sibol

Tree planting activity and fund raising for AKBAY[3]

Y4iT (Youth Congress for Information Technology)

Convention of IT students conducted by UP Information Technology Training Center (UP ITTC); UP Circuit volunteers in this yearly event[7]

The Philippine Youth Congress on Information Technology or "Y4iT" (Youth for IT) is an annual event hosted by UP ITTC and UP SITF.

Since 2003, the University of the Philippines Information Technology Training Center has been bringing together students, faculty, IT practitioners and enthusiasts, government officials, national leaders, and prominent IT personalities from many parts of the country and the world to discuss and share knowledge about recent trends in IT. Organized by the UP System, UP Information Technology Training Center, and the UP System Information Technology Foundation, Inc., it has established itself as not just any annual IT convention, but as a brand that every college IT student recognizes.

With over 100 speakers sharing their knowledge and experience on a wide array of IT topics, Y4iT continues to provide a venue for experiencing activities and witnessing talks that cover IT and IT-related topics, thus developing awareness and honing global competitiveness among IT practitioners and enthusiasts.

Division Wars (Div Wars)

A team building event where the different divisions compete with one another

Circuit Week

A showcase of UP Circuit’s activities throughout the years; held every February, the month that UP Circuit is established

EEEscape the ShoCKT

Series of reviews for EEE students. The subjects include Math(17, 53, 54), Physics(71), EEE(11,31)

Microsoft InstallFest

An event of Microsoft, in cooperation with UP Circuit, that promotes the use of genuine Microsoft software by giving free Microsoft software to UP Diliman Engineering students. [6]

Direct to Student Program

Together with the IEEE Education Society, The Direct to Student Program aims to lessen the gap by involving both college students, high school students and even drop outs, working together under one roof to solve fundamental social problems(e.g. Water pollution, Structural problems, Healthcare, etc.)

Before this, volunteers from UP Circuit and other partner organizations conduct seminars and how-to tutorials by promoting the use of OpenCourseWare, as an alternative way to learn.[14]

Awards and Recognitions

UP Circuit’s pride as an organization is in its members’ tradition of academic excellence. The organization is a consistent source of achievers for both the institute and the university. Every semester, its members emerge as part of the list of University and College Scholars. The organization also houses a growing number of Oblation Scholars. The members are not only recipients of various awards inside and outside the university, but they are also chosen to represent the university in different contests, talks and conferences. Despite its young age, the organization has come up with seven BPI-DOST Science Awardees and four Board top-notchers.
