Women in the Philippine Senate are women in the Philippines who have become senators in the Senate of the Philippines.^[1] Since 1947, there have been 20 Filipino women senators in Philippine history.

First woman senator

Main article: Geronima Pecson

The first woman senator in the Philippines was Geronima Pecson, who reaped the third largest number of votes during the Philippine senatorial elections of 1947. During her senatorial term, Pecson had headed the Senate Committee on Education, the Senate Committee on Health and Public Welfare, and the Joint Congressional Committee on Education.^[1]

First woman to be re-elected as senator

Eva Estrada Kalaw was the first woman to be re-elected as senator.

Youngest woman senator

Pia Cayetano was the youngest woman elected senator in the history of the Republic of the Philippines. She was first elected as senator in 2004 and was re-elected in 2010.^[2]

Miriam Defensor Santiago

Miriam Defensor Santiago is a member of the Senate of the Philippines. Defensor was also elected as a judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on December 12, 2011.^[3]^[4] Although currently listed as a judge by the ICC,^[5] Defensor Santiago has yet to take her oath and assume her office there. Defensor Santiago requested that she be the last of the six newly elected judges to take her post to allow her more time to fulfill her responsibilities as a Philippine senator.^[6]^[7]

Loi Estrada

Loi Estrada is the first First Lady to win the seat in the Senate. She served from 2001 to 2007.

Loren Legarda

Loren Legarda is the first Filipino woman senator to top the Senate race twice in 1998 and 2007. She is also the first Filipino woman to become Majority Floor Leader of the Senate of the Philippines.

Leticia Ramos-Shahani

In 1993, Leticia Ramos-Shahani became the first Filipino woman to become President pro tempore of the Senate of the Philippines.

Nina Rasul

Santanina "Nina" Tillah-Rasul is the first Filipina Muslim senator. She served as senator from June 30, 1987 until June 30, 1995.

Tecla San Andres Ziga

Tecla San Andres Ziga was a Filipino senator who was the first woman in the Philippines to top the bar examinations for law degree graduates. She was elected as a senator in 1963.^[8]
