Bhuvanagiri is a town in Nalgonda district of the Indian state of Telangana. It is the headquarters of Bhongir mandal in Bhongir division.[2] It is located on National Highway 163.

Transport

Bhongir as a Lok Sabha constituency came into existence in 2008 as per Delimitation Act of 2002.

Geography

Bhongir is located at 17°30′39″N 78°53′20″E / 17.5108°N 78.8889°E / 17.5108; 78.8889.[5] It has an average elevation of 329 metres (1,079 ft).

Demographics

The municipal area covers 9.63 km². As of 2011 India census,[6] Bhongir had a population of 50,407.[7] Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Bhongir has an average literacy rate of 70%, less than the national average of 74.04%; with male literacy of 78% and female literacy of 61%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Bhongir has 30 wards. It is a municipality with 1 chairman and 29 councillors. Barre Jahngir (2009 - 2011) is the last councilor.

Landmarks

Bhongir fort Bhongir Fort was built on an isolated monolithic rock by the Western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI and was thus named after him as Tribhuvanagiri.[8] This name gradually became Bhuvanagiri and subsequently Bhongir. At the foot of the fortified rocks 609.6 meters above the sea level stands the town of Bhongir, it has a unique egg-shaped construction with two entry points protected by huge rocks. The fort was considered practically impregnable by invading armies. It is associated with the rule of queen Rudramadevi and her grandson Prataparudra II.

Rock climbing school

The Tourism Department has started Rock Climbing training at Bhongir Fort. The training centre is named Rock Climbing School Bhongir. Its objective is to promote adventure tourism at the Bhongir Fort and to provide professional rock climbing training to enthusiasts. The School is offering training in Basic and Advance Rock Climbing with grades. Also 300 ft & 600 ft rappelling is available for walk for tourists. Adventure tourism has become the highlight for visiting students and corporate employees.[9][10]

Transport

Bhuvanagiri town is well connected by road and train. It is 39 km from Hyderabad, capital of Telangana state. There is a TSRTC bus stand and bus depot. Bhongir has a railway station for tourism purpose of Bhongir fort and Yadagirigutta temple. It is connected by a train from Hyderabad by Falaknuma - Bhongir MEMU train and Secunderabad - Warangal trains. The nearest International Airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.[11]
