Moconesi (Ligurian: Moconexi) is a municipality (comune) in the Province of Genoa in the Italian region Liguria. The head-hamlet of Moconesi municipality is the village of Ferrada which is located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northeast of Genoa and 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) from the house in Terrarossa, reportedly place of birth of Christopher Columbus.[1]

Moconesi would mean "casa di Mocco", the name of an ancient Roman legato found in the Tavola bronzea di Polcevera (the famous archeological finding of 1506 recording a sentence of the Roman Senate of 111 A.C. This sentence concerned a territorial dispute of families in the Polcevera Valley of Northern Genoa).[2] The actual territories of Ferrada di Moconesi and vicinities were the property of the family Fieschi of Lavagna, before they became property of the Republic of Genoa in 1147. Moconesi was later included in the Captainship of Rapallo and within the French administration during Napoleon Bonaparte occupation of Northern Italy.

As of 31 December 2004, Moconesi had a population of 2,606 and an area of 16.1 square kilometres (6.2 sq mi).[3]

The municipality of Moconesi contains 14 frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets): Campopiano, Casareggio, Chiose, Cornia, Ferrada (site of the Municipality administration), Gallinaria, Gattorna, Lavaggi, Linaro, Moconesi Alto, Pezzonasca, Sottanego, Terrarossa, and Villa di Cornia.[4] These territories are between 99 and 1,245 metres (325 and 4,085 ft) above sea level.

Moconesi borders the following municipalities: Cicagna, Favale di Malvaro, Lorsica, Montebruno, Neirone, Torriglia, Tribogna.
