Peter Schiefke MP (born April 13, 1979) is a Canadian environmentalist and Liberal politician, who was elected to represent the riding of Vaudreuil—Soulanges in the House of Commons of Canada in the 2015 federal election.[1] On December 2, 2015, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister for Youth affairs.[2]
Raised by a single mother, he and his brother moved frequently throughout the Montérégie and the island of Montreal. In the early 2000s, following the completion of his degree in Creative Arts at Dawson college, Schiefke became a member of the French-Canadian boy band Inmotion. While a member, the group enjoyed some success on the Quebec pop charts, including a number-one hit "Sauve-Moi" described as "a gooey love ballad reminiscent of something 'N Sync or the Backstreet Boys." He has attributed his desire to enter politics to his perception of a decline in the Canadian social system.[3] Following the end of his musical career, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Concordia University, followed by a Master of Science in Renewable Resources at McGill University.[4]
Schiefke spent four years working in northern Uganda working on humanitarian relief ventures, an experience he claims made him more aware of the effects of climate change on people living in developing nations. Upon returning to Canada, he co-founded Youth Action Canada, a not-for-profit organization aimed at getting young people more involved in fighting climate change. He later served as the National Director for the Climate Reality Project-Canada, an organization founded by former Nobel Laureate and American Vice President Al Gore, a post he held from 2009 until 2013.
