San Miguel is a fourth income class municipality in the province of Bohol, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 23,574.[2]

San Miguel is located in the northern interior of the province. It is 86 kilometers and two to three hours ride by bus from the capital city of Tagbilaran. It’s a total land area of 10, 404.4335 hectares bounded in the north by the municipality of Trinidad, in the south by the municipality of Dagohoy, in the west Municipality of Danao and in the east by the municipality of Ubay.

The Municipality was established in July of 1961 by virtue of Executive Order No. 423 dated March 14, 1961. Its mother town is the municipality of Trinidad which also was formerly barrio Ipil of the Municipality of Talibon. The seat of government in the San Miguel was formerly Cambangay Sur which was formerly a part of Talibon when the latter became a pueblo during the Spanish regime.

The early Settlers in these areas were famous for their pioneering efforts. The place which is now the town site was one a forest area teeming with all kinds of games. The early years of American Regime saw the migration of a handful of natives from Ipil which was settlement in the north along the Ipil River. The search for greener pastures brought more settlers into the area.

The big bulk of migrants came from the municipality of Loon, who later on, due to their innate capability for hard work coupled with an uncanny way of adapting themselves to the environment, found the place productive.

San Miguel got its name from St. Michael the Archangel, the town’s patron saint. Two stalwarts among the native residents were also namesakes: Miguel Cambangay and Miguel Cresino. These two persons contributed tremendously for the welfare of the Municipality that two major streets in the Poblacion now bear their names.

Since its township, 8 mayors have been elected into office namely Hon. Enrique V. Alvarez, Hon. Mateo G. Almedilla, Hon Teodorico E. Palma, Hon. Mauricio Bonior, Hon. Segundino M. Hencianos, Hon. Hermogenes Ricafort Sr. acted as OIC Mayor after the EDSA Revolution, Hon. Silvino C. Evangelista and Hon. Claudio C. Bonior.

San Miguel has eighteen barangays and has an estimated population of more than 24 thousand. The western portion of the municipality is generally hilly while the eastern portions are level lands primarily cultivated for agriculture.

The people of San Miguel are generally warm, hospitable, hardworking and peace loving. But ingrained deeply within is their religious devotion. It is this religiosity of the inhabitants that provide the anchor to their being and direction to their diurnal activities. These values make people from San Miguel distinctly SAN MIGUELNOS.
