The 2016 NBA draft will be held on June 23, 2016, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It will be televised nationally by ESPN. National Basketball Association (NBA) teams will take turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The draft lottery will take place during the playoffs, on May 17, 2016.

Eligibility and entrants

The draft is conducted under the eligibility rules established in the league's new 2011 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with its players union. The CBA that ended the 2011 lockout instituted no immediate changes to the draft, but called for a committee of owners and players to discuss future changes.

The NBA is now expected to expand the draft combine to include players with remaining college eligibility (who, like players without college eligibility, would have to be invited in order to attend).[2]

Early entrants

Player who are not automatically eligible must declare their eligibility for the draft by notifying the NBA offices in writing no later than 60 days before the draft. For the 2016 draft, this date will fall on April 24. After this date "early entry" players may attend NBA pre-draft camps and individual team workouts to show off their skills and obtain feedback regarding their draft positions. Under the CBA a player may withdraw his name from consideration from the draft at any time before the final declaration date, which is 10 days before the draft. Under newly implemented NCAA rules, players have until May 25 (10 days after the draft combine) to withdraw from the draft and retain college eligibility.

A player who has hired an agent will forfeit his remaining college eligibility regardless of whether he is drafted. The CBA allows a player to withdraw from the draft twice; the 2016 NCAA rule change brought it in line with the CBA on this detail.

Notably, in a series of tweets on March 23, Kentucky head coach John Calipari claimed that every member of the 2015–16 team who was eligible to declare early—including the team's two walk-ons—would do so. This covered all of UK's underclass roster except Isaac Humphries and Tai Wynyard, who are ineligible for this draft because they were born in 1998.[3] However, only five of Kentucky's players who were not seniors at the time would officially declare on April 24.

College underclassmen

Players listed in bold text have publicly indicated that they have hired agents, or plan to do so, and are thus ineligible to return to NCAA basketball in 2016–17.[4] A record-high 162 under-classed draft prospects had declared themselves for eligibility at the April 24 deadline (116 of them being from college), although college players can get out by May 25.

International players

International players that had declared this year and didn't previously declare in another prior year can also drop out of the draft about 10 days before the draft begins.

Automatically eligible entrants

This is a dynamic list and may never be able to satisfy particular standards for completeness. You can help by expanding it with reliably sourced entries.

Players who do not meet the criteria for "international" players are automatically eligible if they meet any of the following criteria:[108]

Players who meet the criteria for "international" players are automatically eligible if they meet any of the following criteria:

Based on the eligibility rules, all college seniors who have completed their college eligibility and all "international" players who were born on or before December 31, 1994 are automatically eligible for the draft. However, there are other players who became automatically eligible even though they have not completed their four-year college eligibility.

Combine

Main article: NBA Draft Combine

The invitation-only NBA Draft Combine is scheduled to occur in Chicago from May 10 to 15. The on-court element of the combine is scheduled for May 12 and 13. This year, a total of 63 players have entered for the 2016 NBA Draft Combine, with the only two alternates that had their invitations be accepted for the event being Jaron Blossomgame and Marcus Lee.[112] Furthermore, the only international player that got invited and accepted their invitation this year was Zhou Qi of the Xinjiang Flying Tigers.

Draft lottery

Main article: NBA draft lottery

The NBA conducts an annual lottery to determine the draft order for the teams did not make the playoffs in the preceding season. Every NBA team that missed the NBA playoffs had a chance at winning a top three pick, but teams with worst records had a better chance at winning a top three pick. After the lottery selected the teams that receive a top three pick the other teams receive an NBA draft pick based on their winning percentange from the prior season. The table below shows each non-playoff team's chances (based on their record at the end of the NBA season) of receiving picks 1–14.

The 2016 NBA lottery will be held on May 17.

Draft ceremony

In the first round of the draft, each team has five or less minutes (if they pick early) to decide which player they would like to select. During the five or less minutes, the team can also propose a trade with another team before making their final selection.[122] The NBA commissioner then will announce the selection and the player, wearing a basketball cap sporting the team's logo, comes up to the stage to be congratulated and presented to the audience.[123][124] In the second round, each team has two or less minutes to make their picks while the deputy commissioner assumes the commissioner's role.[125][126]

The NBA annually invites around 15–20 players to sit in the so-called "green room", a special room set aside at the draft site for the invited players plus their families and agents. When their names are called, the player leaves the room and goes up on stage. Other players who are not invited are allowed to attend the ceremony. They sit in the stands with the fans and walk up on stage when (or if) they are drafted.[127]

Trades involving draft picks

Pre-draft trades

On February 22, 2011, the Denver Nuggets acquired the option to swap 2016 first-round picks with the New York Knicks in the three-team trade (along with the Minnesota Timberwolves) that sent Carmelo Anthony to New York.[114][128] On February 21, 2013, the Toronto Raptors acquired the less favorable of either the Knicks or the Nuggets picks in the trade where they sent Andrea Bargnani to New York in exchange for Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, Quentin Richardson.[115]

On July 11, 2012, the Los Angeles Lakers traded a 2016 first round draft pick protected top 3, also top 3 protected in 2017, unprotected 2018; a 2013 first round pick, a 2013 second round pick, a 2014 second round pick, and $3 million cash in exchange for Steve Nash.[129] That selection would later on be traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on February 18, 2015 where the Phoenix Suns traded that selection to Philadelphia and the Milwaukee Bucks acquired Michael Carter-Williams, Miles Plumlee and Tyler Ennis, while losing Brandon Knight to the Suns.[113]

On July 12, 2013, the Boston Celtics traded Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry and D.J. White to the Brooklyn Nets for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Keith Bogans and their unprotected first-round draft picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The Celtics also received the right to swap first-rounders with the Nets in 2017.[130]

On July 10, 2014, the Boston Celtics traded a 2015 conditional second round pick protected top 55 in 2015, else extinguished, which was not exercised in a 3-team trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets for Tyler Zeller, Marcus Thornton, and a first round pick from the Cavaliers protected top 10 in 2016–18, unprotected in 2019, in 2014.[131]

On August 23, 2014, the three-team deal between the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Cleveland Cavaliers had the Sixers acquiring a Miami first-round pick (top 10 protected in 2015 and 2016) that Cleveland acquired four years prior.[132][121]

On December 18, 2014, the Dallas Mavericks traded Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, Brandan Wright, a first-round pick (protected outside the top 3 plus 15-30th in 2015, top 7 in 2016) and a 2016 second-round pick with the Boston Celtics to acquire Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell.[119]

On February 19, 2015, the Denver Nuggets traded Arron Afflalo and Alonzo Gee to the Portland Trail Blazers for Will Barton, Victor Claver, Thomas Robinson and a 2016 first round pick (protected top 14 in 2016–17, or else conveyed to a 2018 second round pick and a 2019 second round pick.[120]

On July 20, 2015, the Denver Nuggets traded Ty Lawson and a 2017 second round draft pick to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Joey Dorsey, Nick Johnson, Kostas Papanikolaou, Pablo Prigioni, a 2016 first round draft pick, and cash considerations.[118]

On February 18, 2016, the Phoenix Suns traded Markieff Morris to the Washington Wizards for Kris Humphries, DeJuan Blair and a 2016 first round pick (protected top 9 in 2016–2021, unprotected in 2022).[117]
