Barbieri earned his law degree from Western State University College of Law.[3]
Controversies
Barbieri came to widespread attention on February 23, 2015, after asking a doctor giving testimony if a woman could swallow a camera in order to undergo a remote gynecological exam. In response to commentary on social media, he explained his remarks: "I was being rhetorical, because I was trying to make the point that equalizing a colonoscopy to this particular procedure was apples and oranges... So I was asking a rhetorical question that was designed to make her say that they weren't the same thing, and she did so. It was the response I wanted."[4][5]
Elections
- 2010: When seven-term Republican representative James W. Clark retired and left the 3A seat open, Barbieri won the four-way May 25, 2010, Republican primary with 2,047 votes (39.4%);[6] he won the November 2, 2010, general election unopposed with 12,168 votes.[7]
- 2012: Redistricted to District 2A, Barbieri won the May 15, 2012, Republican primary with 3,147 (57%) of the votes against challenger Mark D. Fisher. In the November 6, 2012, general election he faced and defeated Democratic nominee Cheryl Stransky with 14,142 (65.7%) of the vote.[8]
- 2014: In the May 20, 2014, Republican primary, Barbieri defeated challenger Fritz Weidenhoff with 3,253 (67.84%) of the votes. He once again faced Democratic challenger Cheryl Stransky in the general election.
