The California gubernatorial election, 1970 was held on November 3, 1970. The incumbent, Republican Ronald Reagan, won re-election over Democrat and Speaker of the Assembly Jesse "Big Daddy" Unruh. After leaving office in 1975, Reagan joined presidential primaries in 1976 but narrowly lost to President Ford. He was elected the President of the United States in 1980.
