Karimnagar district is a district in northern Telangana, India. The city of Karimnagar is the district headquarters, and has a population of about 300,000. The district has two municipal corporations at Karimnagar and Ramagundam.

The district is currently a part of the Red Corridor.[2]

Etymology

Karimnagar was originally called Elagandala.[3] Later Kannada kingdoms such as Western Chalukyas ruled it. It was part of the great Satavahana Empire. Later, Nizams changed the name to Karimnagar, derived from the name of Syed Karimullah Shah Saheb Quiladar.

Geography

Karimnagar district occupies an area of 11,823 square kilometres (4,565 sq mi),[4] comparatively equivalent to the Philippines' Panay Island.[5] It borders Adilabad District in the north, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in the northeast, Warangal District in the south, Medak District in the southwest and Nizamabad District in the west.

Economy

In 2006, the Indian government named Karminagar as one of the country's 250 most impoverished districts (out of 640).[6] It is one of the nine districts in Telangana currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[6]

Demographics

According to the 2011 census Karimnagar district has a population of 3,811,738,[7] roughly equal to the nation of Liberia[8] or the US state of Oregon.[9] This gives it a ranking of 67th in India (out of 640).[7] The district has a population density of 322 inhabitants per square kilometre (830/sq mi).[7] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 9.16%.[7] Karimnagar has a sex ratio of 1009 females for every 1000 males,[7] and a literacy rate of 64.87%.[7]

Household indicators

In 2007–2008 the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) interviewed 1005 households in 40 villages across the district.[10] The IIPS found that 92.8% had access to electricity, 94.9% to drinking water, 36.9% to toilet facilities, and 16.8% lived in a pucca (permanent) home.[10] 24.8% of girls wed before the legal age of 18[11] and 79.1% of interviewees carried a BPL card.[10]

Administrative divisions

The district has 5 revenue divisions in the district namely, Karimnagar, Jagtial, Sircilla, Peddapalli, Manthani.[12] Karimnagar, Ramagundam are the two municipal corporations and there are 5 municipalities namely, Jagtial, Korutla, Metpally, Sircilla in the district. The Nagar Panchayats include Huzurabad, Vemulavada, Jammikunta, Peddapalli, Husnabad.[12]

Tourism

Kurikyal, Vemulavada, Nagnoor are some important Jain Heritage sites

The district is also home to many heritage destinations such as Nagunur Fort, Dhulikatta, Elgandal fort, Molanguru Fort, Ramagiri Killa etc.[13] The waters of lower Manair Dam is a spectacle to behold. Karimnagar is a resource rich district. There are many religious places of importance. Some of them include Raja Rajeshwara temple of Vemulawada, Lord Narasimha temple in Dharmapuri. Hanuman temple in Kondagattu, Lord Shiva temple in Kaleshwaram etc.

Economy of Karimnagar district is mainly dependent on agriculture and its allied industries such as rice mills, saw, oil, other grain mills, animal husbandry, seed and other processing mills etc. Other important small sector industries include manufacture of paper, tiles, stone dressing and crushing, cement concrete pipes etc. Silver filigree work is also famous in Karimnagar city and provide livelihood to a lot of artisans. The major industries in the district are Food Corporation of India, National Thermal Power Corporation, Singareni Collieries at Godavarikhani, Kesoram Cement Factory at Basantnagar etc.

Industries

NTPC Ramagundam

NTPC Ramagundam, a part of National Thermal Power Corporation, is a 2600 MW Power station situated at Ramagundam in the state of Telangana, India. It is the current largest power station in South India. It is the first ISO 14001 certified "Super Thermal Power Station" in India.[14]

Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL)

The company's accredited function is to explore and exploit the coal deposits in the Godavari valley coalfield, which is the only repository of coal in South India. Mining activities of SCCL are presently spread over four districts of Andhra Pradesh Viz. Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam and Warangal.[15]

Kesoram Cement Factory

Kesoram Cement is one of the Birla group of companies.It was inagurated in 1967. The plant is one of the biggest in south India and can produce cement with a capacity of 2500 metric tones per day.[16] The technical objectives of the company are to develop indigenous technology and integrate foreign technology wherever necessary.

Granite Industry

Karimnagar district is known for its popular Tan Brown and Maple Red variety of granite. In Karimnagar district, there are over 600 stone quarries spread over several mandals such as Karimnagar, Manakondur, Mallial, Kesavapatnam etc.
