Miss Haiti is a beauty pageant that chooses the delegate that will represent Haiti at the Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Reina Hispanoamericana Pageants.
History
Historically, the most notable contestants were Evelyn Miot and Gerthie David. On July 14, 1962, Evelyn Miot was the first black contestant to be one of the 15 semi-finalists in the Miss Universe Pageant.[1] This was Miss Haiti's first international meet. Gerthie David competed in the Miss Universe Pageant in 1975 and placed in the finals, becoming runner up to Miss Finland, Anne Marie Pohtamo who won the 1975 title. In 1975, Gerthie became the second black woman to be placed in the finals. In 1975 Joelle Apollon was declared Miss Haiti World to represent the country in Miss World Pageant, remaining as the fifth finalist, was the only time Haiti the sent a candidate a Miss World. The 1968 Miss Haiti Universe delegate, Claudie Paquin, was eliminated in the first round of Miss Universe. The last time Miss Haiti Universe competed in Miss Universe before 2010 was in 1989, the delegate was Glaphyra Jean-Louis.
The Pageant Today
Today Miss Haiti Universe is being organized by Magali Febles from PR is National Director in Haiti. The organization finds young ladies from Haiti's 10 departments through the preliminary pageants (Concours Miss Haiti Departementaux) The winners and first runners-up join the current Miss Haiti Universe in Port-au-Prince for two weeks of preparation to participate in the Miss Haiti Universe Pageant which is held during the month of July. Those who make it to the semi-finals participate in The Grand Coronation.
In 2010 the pageant returned and the Miss Haiti Universe franchise chose a delegate, Sarodj Bertin, to represent the country at Miss Universe after 22 years. This was done under the management of Magali Febles.
Being an experienced leader for the Miss Haiti Universe Organization, Magali has managed Miss Dominican Republic Universe and Miss Puerto Rico Universe. She also holds much expertise in aesthetics as a former beauty salon owner in Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. As reported in a Celestrellas article, "Magali Febles, former director of Miss Puerto Rico, believed that one of the ways for Haiti to rebound from the earthquake's devastation was to celebrate the beauty and grace of the people of Haiti. She moved to organize the Miss Haiti pageant and send a candidate to the Miss Universe event in Las Vegas."[2]
2011 Pageant
On July 27, 2011 contestant Anedie Azael won the title and was chosen to represent Miss Haiti Universe at the Miss Universe 2011 Pageant. Marie Darline Exumé was runner-up with about 14 young ladies vying for the title in total.[3] Magali Febles and Nadia Pressage (of Pressage PR) organized and coordinated the 2011 pageant which took place in the Karibe Convention Center in Pétionville, Haiti.[4]
