Jamia Millia Islamia (Urdu: جامعہ ملیہ اسلامیہ, Hindi: जामिया मिलिया इस्लामिया, translation: National Islamic University) is a public central university located in Delhi. It was established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India during British rule in 1920. It became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988.

Introduction

This university was established by nationalist Muslim leaders in 1920. Its campus was located in South Delhi. The university provides undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate courses. Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920 became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. In Arabic language, Jamia means 'University', and Millia means 'Community'.

The story of its growth from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a central university located in New Delhi—offering integrated education from nursery to research in specialised areas—is a saga of dedication, conviction and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it growing step by step. They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,” said Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.

The University was established by Muslim leaders in 1920, prior to partition.[1] Among the founding leaders, the main were the Ali Brothers, Moulana Mohammad Ali Jouhar and Moulana Shaukat Ali.

The campus is distributed over a large area. Many of its buildings are being modernized. Greenery is supported and advocated. In December 1988 Jamia was accorded the status of a Central University by the parliament under the Jamia Millia Islamia Act 1988 (no. 59 of 1988).[2]

In 2006 the Sultan of Saudi Arabia paid a visit to the university and donated $30 million for construction of a library.[3]

The university's scenic cricket ground (popularly known as the Bhopal Ground) has hosted Ranji Trophy matches and a women's cricket test match. Besides its seven faculties, the Jamia has centres of learning and research, like the Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Centre for Theoretical Physics and the Academy of Third World Studies (ATWS). The Jamia offers undergraduate and postgraduate information and technology courses.

Established in 1985 with the departments of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments. It has added the departments of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Applied Science and Humanities (1996) and has six engineering departments— Applied Sciences & Humanities, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communications, Mechanical Engineering, computer Engineering—and a University Polytechnic. These departments also conduct many projects sponsored various agencies. The faculty offers regular courses and continuing programmes.

The faculty has nine departments:

Islamic Studies has been a part of Jamia’s curriculum since its inception in 1920 at Aligarh. Prominent scholars of Islam have taught Islamic Studies in Jamia as an optional as well as a compulsory subject, to name a few: Maulana Mohd. Ali Johar, Maulana Mohd Aslam Jairajpuri, Maulana Mohd Abdus Salam Kidwai Nadvi, Maulana Qazi Zainul Abideen Sajjad Meeruti, Prof Mohd Mujeeb, Dr. S. Abid Husain, Prof Ziaul Hasan Faruqi, Prof Mushirul Haq, Prof Majid Ali Khan and Prof I.H. Azad Faruqi.In 1975, a separate multi-disciplinary Department of Islamic and Arab-Iranian Studies was instituted. Following a trifurcation, a full-fledged Department of Islamic Studies was established in 1988. The department publishes its annual magazine titled as Sada e Jauhar.

AJK Mass Communication Research Center

The Mass Communication Research Centre was established in 1982 by Anwar Jamal Kidwai, then vice-chancellor (later chancellor) of Jamia Millia Islamia. Jamia is today known primarily for these mass communication courses.[4] according to their own site.[5]

Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CNN)

The mission of this Centre is to promote forefront basic and applied research in the fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, with potential applications towards fulfilling national strategic needs. The main research focus of the Centre includes Nano-fabrication & Nano-device, Nano-materials & Nano-structures, Nano-biotechnology & Nano-medicine, Nano-structure characterization & measurements.

Centre for Management Studies

Jamia Millia Islamia in order to respond to the ever-increasing demand for Full Time quality MBA programme established an autonomous Centre for Management Studies approved by the Executive Council of the University. The University constituted an Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of the Vice chancellor with prominent academicians and professional in management and business education as member to oversee and guide the programme of the Centre. The Centre for Management Studies presently offers three programmes viz. Ph.D. in Management, MBA (Full-Time) Programme and M.B.A. (International Business) Programme.

Ph.D. Programme The centre started the Ph.D. programme in management in 2006-07. The centre endeavours to produce quality research in analysis and applied areas of strategic and various functional areas of management. The centre also aims to work in various areas of importance to the country such as infrastructural development, information technology, poverty alleviation, social and cultural issues with active support and coordination of the government and non-profit organizations.

MBA (Full Time) Programme The MBA (Full Time) Programme, started in the academic session 2003-04, and is aimed at preparing management professional for global business needs. The course content, duration and methodology of the programme are largely based on latest UGC Model Curriculum for MBA. Besides, the programme is unique as it seeks to lay emphasis on global business perspectives. The two-year programme aims to provide knowledge and skills, which can develop confidence in students to work on problems in an organizational framework. The modular design of the curriculum stimulates conceptual and perpetual skills. The content is such that after a strong foundation has been built, advance work in particular areas would be a natural extension. Following training in core subjects, students choose electives, which along with the project work and other assignments, completes the degree requirements. Besides, the centre also organizes Faculty Development Programmes and Management Development Programmes to facilitate the spread of views on education and industry among larger groups.

M.B.A. (International Business) Programme The M.B.A. (International Business) Programme shifted to the Centre for Management Studies in academic session 2010. It adheres to high academic standards. The programme has been framed in close interaction with corporate stalwarts and it aims to meet the rapidly evolving requirements of the global economy. Appreciating the pace of changes in global business the world over, the course structure of M.B.A. (International Business) is constantly updated in tune with the changing needs of the industry. Throughout the programme, students are given the opportunity to enhance their conceptual, analytical and communication skill. To meet this end, lecture, tutorials are used; case studies, seminars, business games, and other modern techniques of imparting education are employed. Apart from semester-end examinations, the performance of the students is assessed on the basis of classroom participation, preparation of periodic projects and presentation, mid-term tests and surprise quizzes etc.

Library

The main central library of the University is known as Dr Zakir Husain Library with its collection of about 400,000 artefacts—including books, microfilms, periodicals volumes, manuscripts, and rare books. Certain halls are dedicated to them. The library is open to all bona fide students of Jamia. Beside this, there are subject wise collection in libraries of some faculties and centres.

Student Activism

History of Student Politics in Jamia Millia Islamia has been a controversial talk all the time.Student elections in the campus has been a subject matter to time.The last Students Union elections were held in Year 2005-06 and was dissolved the same year due to strain between students and administration on wide range of issues.The fresh air of activism in the campus again started in the year 2013 by a group of students like Meeran Haider, Khalid Hassan, Imran Khan, who wanted the entire Jamia community to come and discuss the issues affecting the community in public discourse. From year 2013 onwards the situation in the campus is not the same and students have a strong representation as Jamia Students Forum (A forum of students For the rights of Jamia community)
