List of tallest buildings by U.S. state

The following is a list of the tallest buildings by U.S. state. Forty are in their respective state's largest city and 18 are in their state's capital city. The tallest building in the U.S. by architectural height is currently One World Trade Center in New York, which is approximately 1,776 feet —more than the combined heights of the tallest buildings in Wyoming, Vermont, Maine, South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, New Hampshire, and West Virginia. Many are attributed to banks: three to JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and U.S. Bancorp, and two to Wells Fargo.

Tallest buildings in the U.S. in 2014.

Method on Determination

The building heights compared here are calculated from the ground level to the architectural top. Only continuous occupiable space is included. Non-freestanding structures, observational towers, and communication towers are excluded (North Dakota boasts the largest guyed mast structure in the world), as are antennas extending from the structure top. However integral spires are included, facilitating One World Trade Center to be considered taller than Willis Tower. [68] The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is considered the arbiter for any dispute. For more information, see building heights.

Notes

A.^ City is here defined by the broader definition of urbanized area. See urban area for more information.
B.^ Year completed
C.^ Previously named the Bank One Center.
D.^ St. Patrick's Church in Lewiston, Maine, at 220 feet to the top of its taller spire, is a taller structure, but not inhabited at the higher levels, and therefore does not fit the criteria for tallest buildings.[69]
E.^ The Stratosphere Tower is the largest tower in Nevada and west of the Mississippi River in the United States. However, because the structure is not fully habitable, it is excluded from this list. Please see the Methodology for further information.
F.^ Previously held by the Zip Feed Mill until its demolition in 2005. Qwest Tower is currently uncertified, and some dispute has been noted suggesting St. Joseph's Cathedral (also in Sioux Falls) may actually be taller.[70]
