The 2015–16 season is Forest Green Rovers's 127th year of existence and their 18th consecutive season in the National League.[1] Along with competing in the National League, the club will also participate in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. The season covers the period from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016.

Competitions

Pre-season friendlies

On 12 May 2015, Forest Green Rovers announced three pre-season friendlies, against Cardiff City, Aston Villa XI and West Bromwich Albion XI on 15 July, 22 July and 28 July 2015 respectively.[37] On 1 June 2015, the club announced a further three pre-season ties against Brimscombe & Thrupp, Bishop's Cleeve and Slimbridge.[38] Two days later Forest Green Rovers confirmed they will face Cirencester Town.[39] On 9 July 2015, Forest Green Rovers announced Plymouth Argyle are to visit end of July.[40]

On 3 July 2015, the fixtures for the forthcoming National League season was announced. Forest Green Rovers started away against Altrincham.[41]

Season diary

May

On 6 May 2015, it was announced that Paul White had become the first player offered a new contract to sign with the goalkeeper agreeing a new one-year deal. On 11 May, Jamie Day was announced as the club's new assistant manager. The following day on 12 May, Louis McGrory and Aden Baldwin from the youth team squad signed their first professional contracts to become members of the first team squad. Also on 12 May, it was announced that Cardiff City, an Aston Villa XI and West Bromwich Albion XI would visit The New Lawn as part of the club's pre-season schedule. Two signings were announced on 15 May with the return of Darren Jones on a one-year contract followed by the arrival of Delano Sam-Yorke also on a one-year deal.

June

On 1 June 2015, three away pre-season friendlies were announced by the club against local sides Brimscombe & Thrupp, Bishop's Cleeve and Slimbridge. Two days later, on 3 June, a final away pre-season friendly against Cirencester Town was added to the club's pre-season calendar. Jon Parkin was named as the only Forest Green player in the Conference National Team of the Year on 6 June at the league's AGM. On 10 June, Corby Moore agreed a new six-month contract to remain at the club. Two days later Aaron O'Connor joined the club on a one-year contract following his release by Newport County. On 24 June, James Marwood left the club only six months into an 18-month contract and Anthony Bary also left the club on the same day. It was also announced that Matt Rainey had joined the club as Head Groundsman.

July

On 2 July 2015, the squad returned to pre-season training. Tom Bender was confirmed as having agreed a new six-month contract on the same day. A day later, on 3 July, the 2015-16 National League fixtures were unveiled and it was confirmed that Forest Green would face an opening day away game at Altrincham. On 9 July, it was confirmed that Plymouth Argyle had been added as a home game to the pre-season fixtures. A new club physiotherapist was announced on 10 July with Ian Weston as confirmed as having returned to the club for the first time in 13 years from Cheltenham Town. Three days later news was released that sports therapist Tim Grigg had departed. On 15 July, Keanu Marsh-Brown was unveiled as a new signing having joined the club from Barnet. Later that day Forest Green drew 1-1 with Cardiff City in the first pre-season fixture ahead of the new season.

On 17 July, plans to build a new stadium located off junction 13 of the M5 motorway were announced as part of an eco-park. The following day, a short trip to local side Brimscombe & Thrupp ended in a 1-0 defeat. Then on 22 July, Premier League club Aston Villa visited for Forest Green's third pre-season friendly. The Aston Villa squad included the likes of Joe Cole, Charles Nzogbia and Kieran Richardson and they ran out 3-0 winners with manager Tim Sherwood watching in the crowd. On 23 July, it was confirmed that the scheduled trip to Aldershot Town in October 2015 had been moved to 7 October 2015 for broadcasting on BT Sport. On 24 July, goalkeeper Jonny Maxted penned a one year contract to become the club's last summer signing. Later that night, Forest Green recorded their first pre-season win with a 2-0 away win at Bishop's Cleeve. The following day another pre-season away trip ended in a 0-0 draw at Slimbridge. On 28 July, an under-21 West Bromwich Albion side visited The New Lawn in a friendly won 1-0 by Forest Green. On 31 July, a final home pre-season meeting with Plymouth Argyle ended in a 5-3 defeat.

August

On 1 August 2015, Forest Green's final pre-season friendly saw the team travel to Cirencester Town, only to suffer a 3-0 loss against the Southern League side. The National League season began on 8 August with a 1-0 victory over Altrincham thanks to a goal from Jon Parkin. On 11 August, the first home match of the season ended in another 1-0 win, this time over Welling United. On 13 August, a goal from Delano Sam-Yorke earned a 1-1 draw in a behind closed doors friendly with Bristol Rovers. On 15 August, Forest Green made it three wins in a row with a 4-0 home victory against Barrow who had two men sent off. Three days later, on 18 August, a fourth consecutive win and clean sheet was recorded thanks to a Kurtis Guthrie goal at newly promoted Boreham Wood. On 19 August, a mixture of first team and Academy players took part in a friendly match against Tuffley Rovers that resulted in a 7-0 victory. On 21 August, it was confirmed that Louis McGrory had joined Evesham United on a one-month loan and Aden Baldwin had joined Bath City also on a one-month loan.

On 22 August, goals from James Jennings, Aaron O'Connor and Jon Parkin sealed a 3-1 win over Lincoln City at The New Lawn. On 24 August, an away friendly against Weston-super-Mare ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat. It was revealed on 28 August that Danny Coles had agreed to leave the club by mutual consent with a year still to go on his contract. On 29 August, Keanu Marsh-Brown scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 away win at Kidderminster Harriers. Two days later a seventh win in a row saw Bromley as the latest side to lose against Forest Green at The New Lawn in front of 1,764 spectators.

September

On 4 September 2015, it was announced that manager Ady Pennock had been named National League Manager of the Month for August. Meanwhile David Pipe made it an awards double by being named Player of the Month. The following day, on 5 September, the club set a National League record by earning an eighth consecutive win at the start of the season following a 2-1 away success at Chester. A 2-1 home win against Southport made it nine straight wins on 12 September, although that run was ended three days later at Woking who inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Forest Green. On 18 September, the club launched its away strip ahead of a second consecutive defeat at Macclesfield Town on 19 September - a match that saw Rob Sinclair sent off in a 4-1 loss.

On 22 September, a crowd of 3127 at The New Lawn watched a dramatic 2-2 derby draw between Forest Green and Cheltenham Town. Darren Carter made his debut in that game, and his signing was confirmed a day later, while it was also announced that Clovis Kamdjo had joined National League rivals Boreham Wood on loan. Stoke City goalkeeper Dale Eve also joined Forest Green on a one-month loan deal before the Cheltenham Town fixture. On 24 September, Corby Moore moved out on loan to Southern Premier Division side Poole Town on a one-month loan. A first home defeat of the season on 26 September came with a 1-0 loss against Gateshead.

October

On 3 October 2015, a goal from Jon Parkin helped Forest Green to a 1-1 draw at Grimsby Town. Four days later, on 7 October, a 3-0 away win at Aldershot Town was broadcast live on BT Sport. A second consecutive 3-0 win followed on 10 October, in the first ever league meeting between Forest Green and Guieley. On 12 October, the draw for the FA Cup fourth qualifying round handed Forest Green an away trip to Margate. The following day, a stoppage time goal by Ross Lafayette led to a 3-2 defeat at Eastleigh. On 14 October, it was revealed that the club's FA Cup trip to Margate had been selected for live television coverage on BT Sport.

On 17 October, Tranmere Rovers were the visitors to The New Lawn and they picked up all three points with a 2-0 win. On 23 October, it had been confirmed that Corby Moore had gone out on loan again, this time joining Frome Town. The club's FA Cup fourth qualifying round trip to Margate ended with a 2-1 victory on 24 October thanks to goals from Keanu Marsh-Brown and Kurtis Guthrie. On 26 October, the draw for the first round of the FA Cup handed Forest Green an away trip to Football League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon. The following day it was announced that Jonny Maxted had extended his stay at the club until 2017 after triggering a clause in his contract. On 30 October, the club announced that it had gone fully vegan having stopped the sale of cows milk at The New Lawn. The month ended with a home league win over Chester thanks to goals from Jon Parkin and Keanu Marsh-Brown on 31 October.

November

On 7 November 2015, a stoppage time winner from Elliott Frear earned Forest Green an FA Cup first round giant killing at League Two side AFC Wimbledon. The FA Cup second round draw took place two days later and drew the club in an away tie against League Two side Oxford United, scheduled for December. On 10 November, a late goal from Kurtis Guthrie in an away match at Welling United earned a 1-1 draw. On 14 November, Forest Green defeated Dover Athletic 3-1 at The New Lawn.

On 21 November, the second Gloucestershire derby of the season saw a second half goal from Darren Carter earn the club a point against top of the table Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road in front of a crowd of 5,449. Two days later, on 23 November, a home game against Bristol City in the Gloucestershire Senior Cup saw Forest Green win 2-1. On the same day it was announced that striker Brett Williams had joined the club on a one-month loan from Stevenage. On 27 November, Tom Bender moved out on loan to National League South club St Albans City on a one-month loan. The following day Jon Parkin scored twice to earn Forest Green a 2-0 home win over Altrincham. On 30 November, the first round draw for the FA Trophy handed the club an away trip to National League South Havant & Waterlooville.

December

On 6 December 2015, a goal from Kemar Roofe was enough to earn Oxford United a 1-0 FA Cup second round victory over Forest Green at the Kassam Stadium. Six days later, on 12 December, a 2-0 away loss against Havant & Waterlooville saw the club exit the FA Trophy at the first round stage. A Kurtis Guthrie header on 67 minutes earned a 1-0 home win against Boreham Wood on 19 December as the club made it six National League games unbeaten. On 26 December, Forest Green travelled to Torquay United and suffered a 4-1 defeat. Two days later however the visit of Kidderminster Harriers to The New Lawn saw Forest Green return to winning ways with a 3-0 victory. On 30 December, it was announced that the team's scheduled away fixture with Lincoln City had been moved forward to 16 January 2016 from its original February date. The following day, it was confirmed that Corby Moore and Tom Bender had left the club at the end of their six-month contracts.

January

On 1 January 2016, a televised match in front of the BT Sport cameras saw Forest Green beat Torquay United 3-1 at The New Lawn. On 4 January, it was confirmed that Clovis Kamdjo would remain on loan at fellow National League side Boreham Wood until the end of the season. The scheduled away clash with Guiseley on 9 January was called off on the day of the game because of a waterlogged pitch. On 11 January, the Eco Park stadium plans for a new stadium for Forest Green were submitted to Stroud District Council. On 15 January, it was confirmed that Aaron O'Connor had moved to League Two outfit Stevenage on a one-month loan. Later that day it was confirmed that Brett Williams had re-joined Forest Green on a permanent deal until the end of the season after he had agreed to mutually terminate his contract at Stevenage. On 16 January, a goal from Keanu Marsh-Brown saw Forest Green make it three wins in a row in a 1-0 away win against Lincoln City. On 18 January, the club announced the signing of Kieffer Moore on a contract until the summer of 2017. On the same day it was confirmed that Delano Sam-Yorke had joined National League foes Boreham Wood on loan until the end of the season. On 23 January, the club confirmed the signing of Birmingham City midfielder Charlie Cooper on a one-month loan. On the same day a goal from Jon Parkin led to a 1-0 home win over Braintree Town, which saw Forest Green return to the top of the National League table. The following day, on 24 January, it was revealed that Darren Jones had left the club.

On 26 January, a 90th minute goal from Kurtis Guthrie in a midweek game at Southport saw Forest Green pick up a 1-0 win that moved the team to the top of the National League table. On 28 January, the signing of Ben Jefford was announced on an 18 month contract from Welling United. The following day on 29 January it was announced that youth team product Aden Baldwin had joined Bristol City for an undisclosed fee. A stoppage time winner from Charlie Clough on 30 January in a 2-1 win over Macclesfield Town at The New Lawn saw Forest Green make it six wins in a row.

February

On 1 February 2016, it was announced that Aaron O'Connor had moved permanently to Stevenage with his loan move being made permanent. The following day it was confirmed that Anthony Jeffrey had signed for the club from National League rivals Boreham Wood for an undisclosed fee. He was instantly loaned back to Boreham Wood to assist with their fight against relegation. Also on 2 January, Paul White's time as a Forest Green player was brought to an end after it was confirmed he had left the club by mutual consent. Two days later, on 4 January, Dale Eve returned to the club on a permanent deal until the end of the season having spent time on loan at The New Lawn a few months before. On 5 January, young midfielder Louis McGrory penned a new one-year contract to keep him at the club until the summer of 2017. Also on the same day it was announced that Adrian Pennock had been named National League manager of the month for January. A goal deep into stoppage time from Brett Williams on 6 January rescued a point in a 2-2 away draw at Wrexham. On 13 February, goals from Jon Parkin and Elliott Frear earned a 2-0 away victory against FC Halifax Town. A week later on 20 February, Jon Parkin scored twice to secure a 2-1 home win against Eastleigh. On 23 February, a late goal from Brett Williams earned three points in an evening match at Guiseley. The month ended with an away trip to Barrow, where having led 2-0 thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore and Keanu Marsh-Brown, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

March

On 4 March 2016, Forest Green's 11 match unbeaten run was ended following a 1-0 televised live home defeat against Grimsby Town on BT Sport. On 8 March it was announced that the scheduled home fixture against Aldershot Town later in the month had been brought back 24 hours to take place on Good Friday on 25 March. Four days later a James Jennings first half goal was enough to secure a 1-0 away win at Gateshead. On 14 March, Forest Green progressed into the semi-finals of the Gloucestershire Senior Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Shortwood United after the two sides had drawn 1-1 after 90 minutes. On 19 March, Darren Carter scored and was sent off in a 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. Kurtis Guthrie made a goal scoring debut for England C on 22 March in an international against Ukraine. Keanu Marsh-Brown also played in the international friendly. The following day, on 23 March, Louis McGrory joined National League rivals Aldershot Town on loan until the end of the season, whilst Lenny Pidgeley joined Forest Green on a contract until the end of the season from Leatherhead. On 25 March, Forest Green's first goalless draw of the season came in a home game against Aldershot Town on Good Friday. That game was followed up with a 2-2 away draw at Bromley on 28 March on Easter Monday. Having led 2-0 at half time thanks to two goals from Kurtis Guthrie, Forest Green conceded twice in the second half, including a stoppage time goal to earn only a draw.

April

On 2 April 2016, Forest Green were held to a second consecutive home goalless draw by Wrexham. The club's next match, at Braintree Town on 9 April, ended level at 1-1 - a fifth consecutive draw. On 12 April, Brett Williams and Kieffer Moore both scored twice to help Forest Green to a 4-3 Gloucestershire Senior Cup semi-final away win over Bristol Rovers. Kieffer Moore scored again on 16 April in a 2-1 home loss against Woking that confirmed Forest Green couldn't win the National League title.
