South Africa is scheduled to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This will be the nation's seventh consecutive appearance at the Games in the post-apartheid era, and nineteenth overall in Summer Olympic history.

Athletics

South African athletes have so far achieved qualifying standards in the following athletics events (up to a maximum of 3 athletes in each event):[1][2]

Boxing

South Africa has entered two boxers to compete in each of the following weight classes into the Olympic boxing tournament. Sibusiso Bandla and Sikho Nqothole had claimed their Olympic spots at the 2016 African Qualification Tournament in Yaoundé, Cameroon.[3]

Golf

South Africa is expecting golfers for the sport's first Olympic appearance since 1904. A maximum of four golfers from each country who are listed in the top 15 players, or two from the top 60, on the International Golf Federation's Olympic rankings on 11 July 2016 will be permitted to compete.[10]

Former major winners Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, ranked twelfth and twentieth in the men's world rankings respectively, announced in April 2016 that they would not compete in Rio.[11][12]

Gymnastics

Artistic

South Africa has entered one artistic gymnast into the Olympic competition for the first time since 2004. Ryan Patterson had claimed his Olympic spot in the men's apparatus and all-around events at the Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janeiro.

The South Africa men's rugby sevens team qualified for the Olympics by having achieved one of the top four places at the 2014–15 Sevens World Series.[13]

Swimming

South African swimmers have so far achieved qualifying standards in the following events (up to a maximum of 2 swimmers in each event at the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT), and potentially 1 at the Olympic Selection Time (OST)):[16][17] To be added to the Olympic roster, swimmers must finish in the top two of each individual pool event under the Olympic Qualifying Time at the South African Aquatics Championships (April 10 to 16) in Durban.[18]

A total of 11 male swimmers, led by London 2012 champions Chad Le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh, had been selected to the South African roster for the Olympics; failing to send the women for the second time in history (the first being done in 2004).[19]

Triathlon

South Africa has secured a quota in the men's triathlon event as a result of a top three finish from Richard Murray at the ITU World Qualification Event in Rio de Janeiro.[20][21]
